Change Your Attitude ~ Change Your Life!

Greetings from St. Pete Beach Florida with another beautiful sunset.
Thank you so much for your patience! I know it's been ages since I wrote something new for you from the heart.

And, you're probably asking, what IS the key to changing our lives, Jamie? We know to chant, we know to do shakubuku, we know to study and encourage others, but what if a problem is just staying stuck, and we can't find a way out through our determined prayer?

I faced such a moment about a month ago, regarding a situation I was in, where I REALLY THOUGHT it was the other people's fault. I knew THEY were the ones causing my suffering. (Even though, as a Buddhist, I know I create my own life, and it's a reflection of me - it really felt as if THIS problem was coming from the outside) Exactly.

Well, thank goodness for the Buddhist concept of getting guidance. I made a call to one of my local leaders and requested guidance. She, in all her wisdom, connected me to a region leader whom I'd not met yet, and we got together at the center. It was a good meeting and we established a friendship, and she said I could call anytime.

Establishing friendships with our senior leaders right where we are is crucial. That's why, when you write to me for guidance, I ask you to consult with your local leaders. They are there for you! Please reach out to them. They can help you challenge your problems.

We are responsible for building these relationships through daimoku and action. We can chant to connect with a leader who inspires us.

So, when push came to shove and my suffering over this situation was growing, I reached out to this region leader and she gently reminded me that whatever I was feeling, any suffering and frustration, was already in my life due to causes I made in the past, and the ONLY way to change the situation was to chant to change my attitude. My attitude. Yikes. I've been chanting for 33 years, and I still need these reminders from time to time, right?

So the next morning, I woke up and chanted as if to draw fire from wet stone. I chanted that this daimoku today was changing my attitude, and I pondered what the word attitude really means. I chanted to change my energy, and to turn all my anger into love and appreciation. I scanned my body in my mind and chanted to change every cell in my body...every attitude about this problem from within. I chanted to open myself to a new possibility, and for my daimoku to have immediate results as the people around me felt my new heart, my new attitude and I proved the power of this incredible law once again!

And, from that moment forth (hon nim myo) everything changed. Daimoku is that powerful! They DID feel my heart. Everything improved. And I started winning again, not whining!

So now, with every problem or challenge I face, I am chanting to change my attitude...and I feel the richness and the depth of the power of Chanting nam-myoho-renge-kyo deepening more and more!

I'm chanting, as we all are, for the youth of the world, and here in America I'm seeing the results.

And May 3rd is only a few days away. Let's each challenge a breakthrough! Let me hear from you at chantforhappiness@gmail.com. Share your breakthroughs!

What does Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo mean, and why do we chant it?

What does Nam-myoho-renge-kyo mean,
and why do we chant it?

By Jamie Lee Silver of ChantforHappiness.com -

Translate button is at the top right.)

The literal translation of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is:

"I fuse my life
with the Mystic Law
 of cause and effect
through sound vibration."

Nam-myoho-renge-kyo
is the title of the Lotus Sutra,
the Buddha's highest teaching
that declares
ALL people possess the Buddha Nature...
all people ARE Buddhas...
and we can access our own Buddhahood ~ our inherent wisdom, determination, power to take the best action for our lives while benefiting others, sense of vitality and ability to make a difference.
We can create fulfillment, happiness,
and the strength to turn
EVERY POISON INTO MEDICINE
~by chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo.

That's it. We don't need to change our diets, memorize lists of paths, change our lifestyles, shave our heads, wear robes, or "purify our desires." This form of Buddhism is radically different than most forms you may have encountered. SGI (Soka Gakkai Buddhism is accessible to ALL.

AND the most important aspect of our prayer is to do our own human revolution...to change the very core of our lives...change our karma, and by doing so, change the world around us as well.
We chant for "Kosen-Rufu," a world of respect for all life, and for all who are suffering to be happy. Through our own happiness, we create happiness for all. We can all win in life together.

When we chant, we harness the energy that is our birthright. And we chant twice a day, every single day, to get and keep our lives in rhythm.

When we are in rhythm we are in the right place at the right time... to find out about and get the job...or to meet the man of our dreams...or to protect our child from danger. When we are in rhythm, life isn't so much of a struggle as it is a joy...we see the beauty in everything and we feel our lives overflowing with appreciation.

In fact, we view obstacles themselves as benefits, as strange as that may sound....because obstacles make us chant more, and when we chant more we draw even higher life conditions and deeper satisfaction into our lives.

What can we chant FOR?
Anything. Make sure to write your list, and rewrite it when you achieve those goals. Ultimately, our goal is to change our own selves...to overcome our doubt and negativity, and to experience life as the Buddhas we are. When WE change, our environment changes. We are all interconnected.

We chant for others,
we chant for our planet,
our countries, and ourselves.
We can chant for whatever our desire may be...even if it might not be the "right" desire for us. In the act of chanting, we will change our karma and our desires themselves will naturally begin to shift. We will open our lives to the deeper wisdom within...the deeper yearning, the REAL desires that we have forgotten or given up on. We will grow. We will prosper and we will blossom.

We will gain the wisdom of the right action to take - because ACTION springs from wisdom.

The challenge is...we need to DO it. We have to chant to bring all this rhythm and harmony out. And that's why we practice together as an organization, the SGI, The Soka Gakkai, our fellowship of friends who support each other, chant for each other, and create a new Soka family for each practitioner. We are so fortunate.

We are in this life together...sharing our challenges and our successes. If you are not yet connected to the SGI please go to sgi-usa.com and find your local members. You will be so glad you did.
If you live in or around St. Pete Beach Florida you can connect with me through chantforhappiness@gmail.com.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Some Powerful Quotes from Daisaku Ikeda:
THIS moment, this instant, is important,
not some unknown time in the future.
Today, this very day is what matters.
You must put your whole being
into the time that exists now.
For future victory rests in the present moment.
BUDDHISM holds that
everything is in a constant state of flux.
Thus, the question is
whether we are to accept change passively
and be swept away by it,
or whether we are to take the lead
and create positive changes on our own initiative.
While conservatism and self-protection
might be likened to winter, night and death,
the spirit of pioneering and attempting to realize
the ideals evokes the images of spring,
morning and birth.
Do gongyo and chant daimoku with a fresh spirit.
And, filled with renewed vitality,
build a history of accumulating fresh benefit.
"At That Time" Our Determination Changes Everything!
(You can subscribe to this blog by putting your email in the box to the right)
(I write this blog to share my journey, and use my life as an example that anything is possible throuch chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. I've been practicing Buddhism for 33 years with the SGI, but these writings, this blog, are from my heart to yours and not officially endorsed by any organization)
Deciding to "Stand Up and Fight" Changes Everything!
The beginning of the "Expedient Means" chapter of the Lotus Sutra, which we recite during morning and evening Gongyo begins with the phrase "At that time the World Honored One calmly arose from his samadhi and addressed Shariputra"
In "The Heart of the Lotus Sutra" Daisaku Ikeda states:
"In terms of our practice, therefore, I would like to stress that "that time" exists only when we pray to the Gohonzon and manifest determination and awareness of our mission for kosen-rufu. (World peace through our own human revolution - using our problems to FUEL our happiness and light the way of inspiration for all by showing the impossible is possible through our lives, notes mine, js)
We have to make a determination,
pray and take action.
Unless we do so,
our environment will not change in the least,
though five or ten years may pass,
that time" will never arrive.
Our single minded determination for kosen rufu,
(a world of respect for all beings ~ JS)
and that alone,
creates the "time."
"That time" is
when we set our lives in motion,
when we stand up
of our own volition and by our own will and strength. "That time
is when we summon forth strong faith
and take our place on the grand stage of kosen-rufu.
Right now we are gathering as an organization with the determination to unite 50,000 youth in November of 2018 to come together and realize the power of their own lives to change the world, and create lives of fulfillment and happiness through chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo.
We can EACH make our own determination to change that one thing in our lives that we haven't changed yet. Mine is fear, and good health. They are both tied together for me. And drawing my kosen-rufu partner to me. Right now I have just begun a job marketing a Senior Assisted Living Community. I see many people whose lives have changed due to health concerns.
For the first few weeks on the job it was hard to do evening gongyo because I'd come home so tired. And gradually my life became harder and harder. So now, I make a fresh determination to chant every morning and evening no matter how tired I am. Life will become easier and easier. I know this from past experience...
If you're not chanting every morning and every evening, doing shakubuku and studying please do it. Your life will become YOURS in so many ways.
This morning I am bringing two new girlfriends and one of my favorite friends-in-faith to Kosen-rufu gongyo at the Tampa Bay Center. I hope you enjoy your kosen rufu gongyo, too!
It's now or never! We need to bring forth our own wealth of youthfulness as we chant and take action for the youth of the world!
Goethe writes,
"The moment alone is decisive;
Fixes the life of man,
and his further destiny settles."
"That time" is the moment you resolve
from the depths of your heart:
"Now I will stand up and fight!"
From that moment,
your destiny changes.
Your life develops.
History begins. "
(note from Jamie: When I sit in front of my Gohonzon, and look into the mirror of my life... I chant in appreciation for my problems and VOW to show actual proof to others that the impossible is possible, and that each one of my problems leads us closer to a world of happiness for all...because one more woman stood up and said "NO WAY!" "I will WIN!" I picture the outcome already secure and chant in happiness.)
This is the Buddhism of CHANGING our Karma - not just Learning from it ~
(You can now subscribe to this blog by putting your email in the box to the right)
The other day a practicing Buddhist said to me "Well I guess I just have to keep going through this until I learn the lesson from it. That's what life is, learning lessons from our suffering." and I said 'That is not what Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism is all about!"
Yes, I know the Gosho says 'Suffer what there is to suffer and enjoy what there is to enjoy." (From Happiness in This World by Nichiren Daishonin.)  But the Gosho "Reply to Kyo'o" states: "A sword will be useless in the hands of a coward."
As Buddhas we can be fearless!
I do not think it's important to "learn from our karma". Of course we can learn from the causes we make, and stop making negative causes...but that is not the same as having the belief that we have to repeat karma over and over again until we "learn" from it."
I think it's important to change it!
When I first began chanting in San Francisco I got a job with an abusive, screaming, swearing boss. He wasn't swearing and screaming at me, but that was not something I ever wanted to experience again. Every morning, I chanted a solid hour of daimoku to CHANGE THIS KARMA forever...and never, ever have an abusive boss again. I chanted for this boss's happiness, and the happiness of all involved. After chanting this way for a significant amount of time I gained the strength to stand up to this man and stop him when he abused my coworkers.
Eventually, that job ended and I had a series of wonderful bosses, and lots of business success. Some time later that karma resurfaced, but not in quite as bad a way. I got a boss who drove me crazy with her anxiety. At this time I did not say to myself "Wow, this Buddhism doesn't work, I can't believe I got another boss who makes me suffer."
No. I just dug right back into my practice, made a new determination and chanted with all my might for her happiness, for my success, for my future and all my dreams. At the time, I really wanted to move from San Francisco. This boss ended up giving me a substantial severance package - enough so that I could take the holiday season off to be with my babies and then move back to Chicago to raise my kids close to my Mom in the good old midwest.
Did I "learn" from these instances. YES! I learned I can change whatever karma I want by chanting. I learned I am a powerful Buddha.
I did not have to learn "why am I attracting this into my life?" No! I just learned to change it!
As Daisaku Ikeda writes in the October 16th, 2015 World Tribune, in the essay "Making Hope", page 6:
"I do not believe that people are powerless. The philosophical tradition that I embrace, on the most fundamental dimension - that of life itself - teaches that each human life partakes of the limitless life force of the cosmos. The same power that moves the universe exists within our own lives. Each individual has immense potential, and a great change in the inner dimension of one individual's life has the power to touch the lives of others and transform society. Everything begins with us."
Lighting the Lamp of Hope from Florida with Career Success
So I'm almost a month into my job and it's incredibly exciting. I've already produced a lot of success, and I take my smile everywhere I go. In all things "Our success is our energy. Our energy is our success." that is my belief, and those are my words.
When we freely express our Buddha nature everything flowers around us. We can create a place for the flowers of our life to bloom.
Just a little background:
As many of you know, In 2009, I created this blog to show actual proof through my own life, to inspire people to learn about chanting, and to inspire my beloved fellow practitioners all over the world. This is not an easy practice, but when we practice correctly, our lives overflow with benefit - so it's worth the work.
We get up early...so we can chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo to awaken the Buddha in our hearts, and set our sights on what is true. We chant the truth in our hearts and make determinations towards this day, and into the future. We tell our lives what we want, for Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is our life, and the life and rhythm of the entire universe.
Through this chant we connect...and we summon all the power of the universe into our lives and dreams. Then at night, we chant again and prepare for the next day. We chant for ourselves, we chant for others, we chant for this world.
About five years ago, life was going great, but I was worried about my son Ben. We soon began a roller coaster ride of trying to keep him alive through a terrible illness. Schizophrenia. And in July of 2015, my beloved Ben succumbed to the illness and took his life. My blog of July 4th, 2015 was my declaration that I would turn poison into medicine. The worst problem can turn into the best benefit. Even this.
Fast forward, I created Bensmemorialmile.com, where we've raised almost 50K for Schizophrenia research and Suicide prevention, and I moved from Chicago to St. Pete Beach Florida where I live overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. I did not work for a year and lived off the saving that resulted from my many years of fortune accumulated through almost 33 years of practice. (This Friday, October 20th, is my 33rd anniversary of receiving the Gohonzon).
In time, I began to chant for my next job.
I chanted for a job that would use all my talents,  where I'd be surrounded by people who inspire me, where I could do public speaking and have a great and growing income, where I could let the light of my life shine and do shakubuku with my life while making new friends, and where I could be HAPPY.
And I was offered many jobs...and found one I accepted.
Now I'm a few weeks into it, and I am having joyful success that is being recognized and applauded. I am surrounded by helpful and inspiring people, and I am having fun while doing good work that helps people.
And the key is to continue chanting to SEE my life, and to expand in my capacity to help others, to do shakubuku (I've not yet shared my Buddhist practice at work, but they are seeing my life shine), and to humbly keep chanting to see what I'm doing wrong so I can correct it and continue moving forward.
I am not perfect, but I chant to learn from my errors and move on. And I chant to love myself completely through it all! I'm chanting each day for the happiness of all of my coworkers as we create this beautiful community that helps seniors.
I am spreading the joyful light of hope, appreciation and love that I feel inside all the time. I have also once again been able to raise my contribution level to the SGI. I know this creates even more fortune and just makes me happy!
Whatever you are facing, you can joyfully create the life of your dreams as you bask in appreciation and continue to devote your life to this practice, shakubuku, study, and creating happiness for yourself and others.
Go Buddha go and never give up!
How to Chant Joyful Abundant Daimoku! Nam-myoho-renge-kyo!
Wisdom for Modern Life by Daisaku Ikeda
October 1, 2017
Time is constantly passing, one moment following fast upon the other.
That's why it's so important to press forward boldly,
without complaining or fretting.
The person who looks to the future and keeps moving ahead is eternally youthful.
Such a person's heart is filled with flowers and shines brilliantly.
Hello friends!
This week I started a new and thrilling job.
Once again, I am working with my beloved seniors.
Last week, before I began my new job, I spent Sunday morning chanting a three hour toso.
(Nam-myoho-renge-kyo over and over and over!)
I've written several blogs about how to chant for longer times. I recommend making yourself comfortable, having drinks nearby, turning off your phone, and inviting your friends to join you.
Also, you may want to keep a journal nearby to write your insights and the things that come into your mind. By writing down your "to-do list" you can clear your mind to focus on your prayer.
On Sunday I was chanting from my heart to connect to every single person who was also chanting in front of their Gohonzons...and for our unity to unite the world.
Here is the focus of my prayer:
PowerPrayer for a Powerful Life
Life!
I am more determined than ever to accomplish my human revolution.
I am determined to see my life more clearly than ever, and to have to courage to make the changes I need and want to make.
I'm determined to correct my faults,
and to end any form of self-slander
(self-criticism, self-anger, and any kind of discouragement).
I now have the courage to see the truth in my life and follow MY truth for my highest good, and the good of all.
In this world, where there is so much ignorance and delusion, I am determined to see the truth and make the best cause for my happiness and the good of all at all times.
I'm determined to see the beauty and joy in every single moment!
I'm determined to create unity at my job and to be kosen-rufu in action! I'm determined not to complain about anything, and to take each challenge straight to the Gohonzon and chant, chant, chant! I will appreciate everything, and love, love, love myself!
And I began my job with energy and happiness.
Our daimoku is so powerful!
Today at kosen-rufu gongyo, the speaker talked about our 249 day journey to 50,000 youthful lions for kosen-rufu gathering in America next year. He said he was dusting off the dream he'd shelved, and he was using this campaign, and his prayers and actions towards it to fuel his dream.
Perfect. This is an opportunity for all of us. We can use this momentous goal to recommit to OUR goals, re-dream our dreams and make them a reality. We can do it. Now, more than ever, let's make every daimoku count, and be the happiest beacons of light we can possibly be!
The Key to True Wealth and Good Fortune
Hello! After two weeks away because of Hurricane Irma I am back in St. Pete Beach in time for my birthday today!
My trip was amazing. A week in Asheville with my Daddy and my Janis, then a week in Chicago. And, because of all the incredible fortune of the last two weeks,  I  want to talk about fortune and inconspicuous benefit.
I set off on my trip on Wednesday before most people evacuated, although it was an arduous drive. I was the sole driver, and kept faith in my ability to be protected, even though there were accidents all over the road. I was easily able to get gas. I chanted most of the way and knew all would be well in this courageous journey. I drove 18 hours to reach my Dad in two days.
My stay in Asheville was full of magical moments with my Dad and Janis. We read books together, went for long walks and enjoyed absolutely perfect warm weather in the mountains. The hurricane came over St. Pete Beach and did not destroy it!
Then my "wasband," my dear friend, and father of my two boys gave me miles to fly to Chicago. Every single moment I was filled with appreciation and love for my friends in Chicago. I got the best massage of my life, I enjoyed incredible weather and brightly turning trees, and made golden memories with my sister and all my friends. I flew back to Asheville, and yesterday drove for 12 hours and got back to my perfect apartment.
I am not telling you these things to "brag." I am sharing this with you because throughout my "Hurrication" I felt my strong life force. I felt my "inconspicuous benefits" becoming conspicuous at jus the right time. I knew I was protected. I chanted in appreciation every day, and I based my life on the Gohonzon, (my own life), and my faith in my life. Today. On my birthday, I've arranged for a party at a gorgeous roof-top deck. On Monday I start a new job. All is incredibly well.
Daisaku Ikeda, in the May-June Living Buddhism from 2011, has an essay called "Become People of True Wealth" This essay is also in My Dear Friends in America. In it he states:
"A person of true success
is one who enjoys a free and unrestrained state of life.
The supraworthy wealthy person is the Buddha.
Attaining Buddhahood is true success;
the Buddha is the eternal wealthy person.
The Buddha possesses the treasure of the law,
as well as all good qualities and all virtues.
He/she defeats all obstacles
and attains all kinds of wisdom.
His/her heart is as vast as the ocean,
and he/she always abides
in a state of limitless freedom and bliss...
"In other words, the Buddha,
or suprawordly wealthy person
is characterized by abundant and strong life force...
Put simply "mind-observing"
means to observe one's own mind
and find the world of Buddhahood
inherent within oneself,
or to realize that in our lives
we possess the limitless treasure house
of all riches gathered from throughout the universe...
Like the lion King,
we fear nothing
and are unaffected by fleeting joys and sorrows.
In Nichiren Buddhism to "observe one's own mind"
means faith in the Gohonzon...
Such a wealthy person
is one who believes and perceives
that his or her life
is itself the supreme treasure house
and who opens this treasure house."
I wish for you all to know you possess this power, and can access it by chanting daily to the Gohonzon, doing shakubuku, studying, and being close with your friends and faith! If I can feel this way, so can you!
PowerPrayer (Fresh Determination) to go from Hope-less to Hope-FULL Right Here Right Now
"No matter how hopeless or bleak things appear, the moment always comes when suddenly our spirit revives, and hope is reborn. That is why we must never give up."
The Life-Giving Power of Each Character of Gongyo
(You can now subscribe to this blog by putting your email address into the box to the right)
Hello friends, I evacuated Florida today. I drove 11 hours in some really bad traffic and made it to halfway to Asheville, North Carolina where I'll stay with my Dad and Jan. I figure, even if the hurricane does not come to St. Pete Beach, I'll have a nice visit with my family. Thanks for your messages! All my best to you. There is so much to chant about...and remember...all real change starts with our own human revolution!
In the Gosho "Letter to Horen," the Daishonin describes the characters of the Lotus Sutra as individual Buddhas emitting beams of light...able to find all those, living and dead, with whom we are connected.
Wow.
What a great thing to learn about while we are all striving to perfect our Gongyo and deepen our faith.
Daisaku Ikeda states in Living Buddhism,
June 2015, page 32:
"...Through chanting the daimoku of the Lotus Sutra, Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, we can transmit benefit even to deceased family members, relatives, friends or acquaintances who may have opposed our Buddhist practice - benefit that will warmly embrace them and lead them to a state of profound peace and comfort.
Similarly, through the power of the Mystic Law, our family members and friends who have passed away in the course of the journey for kosen-rufu - whether from illness or as a result of unexpected accidents or natural disasters - will also be able to enter the path of Buddhahood.
The best offering we can make for the eternal happiness of the departed is to live fully and strive vibrantly for kosen-rufu in their stead..."
"The Daishonin says that
each of the 510 characters
of the verse section
of the "Life Span" chapter
of the Lotus Sutra,
from "ji ga toku burrai"
(Since I attained Buddhahood) (LSOC, 270)
to "soku joju busshin"
(quickly acquire the body of the Buddha) (LSOC, 273), changes into a sun
and then into a Buddha.
It emits great beams of light
that pervade every corner of the universe,
finding Kyoshin's father wherever he might be
and illuminating him
(see WND-I, 517-18).
In other words,
each chapter
of the verse section of the "LifeSpan" chapter
recited by Kyoshin
becomes the Buddha,
shining with the brilliant light of compassion
that reaches his deceased father
in whatever state of being he may reside,
relieving him of his suffering
and guiding him to enlightenment."
What a wonderful life-giving practice we have! Who do you want to reach with your Daimoku today?
Perfecting Our Spiritual Workouts (Gongyo!) to Bring Benefit to Our Lives
As I'm sitting here watching the news about hurricane Irma barreling this way.
Please join me in chanting for Irma to veer to the right and north and miss America completely!
Let's also chant about the flooding in India, the wildfires in the West and continued cleaning up in Texas and all other areas affected by Hurricane Harvey. Oh yes, let's not forget North Korea, and keeping the peace.
There is so much going on.
Here are some of my thoughts on how we can continue to leverage our spiritual muscles to change ourselves, and change the world.
Perfecting our daily recitation of Gongyo and Daimoku is our spiritual work-out for the interior of our lives. This work-out makes our environments
(our world at every moment, and all the people and things and EVERYTHING in it)
flow smoothly...and we can accomplish our goals and live fulfilling lives.
When Shakyamuni was meditating under the Bodhi Tree, he was assailed by many thoughts to make him stop or to throw off his meditation.
He kept focused. He won.
Our practice of Gongyo every day is just like this.
We are the Buddha!
Every day - twice a day!
We must win!
Gongyo is important!
Our concentration will pay off. Doing gongyo with the following guidelines has brought me great benefit.
(As always ~ these writings are mine, and come from my heart to yours.)
5 Keys to Make Your Gongyo
and Your Life Sparkle!
Don't just "do" Gongyo. Feel it. Experience it.
by Jamie Lee Silver at chantforhappiness.com
1. Put your phone in another room.
                 Claim this time as your own!
2. Pray each silent prayer with all your heart.
Elevate the moment from reading to praying
Read each silent prayer over and over until you can actually feel the appreciation. Read the silent prayers until they sink in...so you are truly praying in appreciation. If you don't know why Nichiren Daishonin and the three presidents deserve your praise, please ask a fellow member and study the history of Nichiren Buddhism and the Soka Gakkai. (Clink the link to the right to find your local SGI group) It took tremendous conviction and courage to bring this practice to us today!
During these prayers, I bring forth the gratitude I feel for having this practice in my life.
3. Begin and end Gongyo
                     with no interruptions.
You can chant as long as you'd like between gongyo and the silent prayers.
Sometimes I recite the silent prayers at the end of Gongyo soon after the recitation...not after finishing all my daimoku for the morning. This makes it easier to do a complete gongyo before I get up to do something else, or refresh my drink or whatever.
I start and complete gongyo. Boom.
Then I can do as much daimoku as I want, with gongyo done. Complete. With no interruptions. If I get interrupted in the middle of gongyo I begin again! I see this helping me complete things in my life on a much more regular basis.
4. Chant every morning and evening.
I know, I know, you've heard this before. The reason I keep repeating this message is that it WORKS! When we do gongyo twice a day our lives get on a roll. You have to experience it to see it! I can't tell you how it feels. I can tell you that one of my YWD (young woman) finally began chanting twice a day (after refusing to do this for two years) she was able to realize a hidden goal, bring it to the surface, chant about it, and now she's living her dream in Colorado. Chanting twice a day WORKS!
5. Perfect Your Rhythm
              and Pronunciation of Gongyo
In the early days of my practice, I was fortunate to have a leader who believed that perfecting gongyo was important. Every day I showed up at her house to fine-tune my rhythm and pronunciation. You can do the same, and it will energize your practice and life.
I suggest finding a mentor in your SGI circle who can work with you. To learn, we can bring a pencil and circle the parts we find difficult, and highlight our mistakes. The next time through we can be aware of the challenging parts because we circled them. We can learn it like a song.
It is easier to learn it right the first time, but not impossible to fix, if learned wrong.
Having perfect gongyo gives us confidence.
I'd like to hear your stories of how perfecting your gongyo changes your life. Everything we do to enhance our practice is reflected in our lives.
Gongyo and Daimoku are our laboratory
where we create the lives of our dreams!
I'm interested in hearing how you are perfecting your gongyo!
Doing Gongyo is like lifting spiritual weights. how strong can we make our lives?
That's what we're talking about!
