15 Quotes on Career Success by Daisaku Ikeda

This is Labor Day Weekend in the States...many have Monday off from work. It signifies the end of the summer, the start of the school year...and getting back to work. Here are some quotes for you:

PRESIDENT IKEDA'S WORDS ON JOBS, CAREERS, AND PERSONAL FINANCE-
(Compiled by Bob Hasegawa)

1. Beauty, benefit and good

Mr. Makiguchi taught that there are three kinds of value: beauty, benefit and good. In the working world the value of beauty means to find a job you like; the value of benefit is to get a job that earns you a salary that can support your daily life; the value of good means to find a job that helps others and contributes to society. (Faith Into Action, page 45)

2. No more moaning

President Toda said that the most important thing is to first become indispensable wherever you are. Instead of moaning that a job differs from what you'd like to be doing, he said, become a first-class individual at the job. This will open the path leading to your next phase in life, during which you should also continue doing your best. Such continuous efforts are guaranteed to land you a job that you like, that supports your life, and that allows you to contribute to society. (Faith Into Action, page 45.)

3. The Fundamental Cause of Unhappiness

Problems as we have seen, are not in themselves the fundamental cause of unhappiness. Lack of power and wisdom to solve them is the real cause. Fortunately we all innately possess infinite power and wisdom; and Buddhism shows us how to develop these qualities.
When in the depths of despair or grappling with a difficult problem, it may be hard to believe that our lives possess unlimited potential. But this is the essence of one of the profoundest Buddhist teachings, known as three thousand realms in a single moment of life, which we will explore in this chapter. (Unlocking the Mysteries of Birth and Death, page 105.)

4. Success Means Not Giving Up

I hope each of you will realize success in your respective fields, fully recognizing that success means not giving up halfway but resolutely pursuing the path you have chosen. To this end, it is also important that you realize that the place where you work is a place for forging your character and growing as a human being. By extension, therefore, it is a place for your Buddhist practice, a place for practicing your faith. When you view things from this angle, all your complaints will disappear. No one is more pathetic than someone who is constantly complaining. (For Today and Tomorrow, Daily Encouragement, at page 283.)

5. Should you quit?

Once you have decided on a job, I hope you will not be the kind of people who quit at the drop of a hat and are always insecure and complaining. Nevertheless, if after you've given it your all you decide to move on, that's perfectly all right too. My concern is that you don't forget that you are responsible for your environment when you make your decision. (Faith Into Action, page 46.)

6. Excel at something

There is a saying that urges us, "Excel at something!" It is important to become trusted by others wherever you are and to shine with excellence. Sometimes people may dislike their job at first but grow to love it once they become serious about doing their best. "What one likes, one will do well," goes another saying. Growing to like your job will also enable you to develop your talent. (Faith Into Action, page 46.)

7. Wisdom vs. Ego

When working for a company--which is like a society or community all its own--it is important to create harmonious relations with your colleagues and superiors, using wisdom and discretion along the way. If you incur your co-workers' dislike by being selfish or egotistic, you will be a loser in work and society. Wisdom is vital to being successful at one's work. The Daishonin writes, "The wise may be called human, but the thoughtless are no more than animals." (Faith Into Action, page 46.)

8. A Buddhist must not be defeated

Buddhism is an earnest struggle to win. This is what the Daishonin teaches. A Buddhist must not be defeated. I hope you will maintain an alert and winning spirit in your work and daily life, taking courageous action and showing triumphant actual proof time and time again. (Faith Into Action, page 3.)

9. What is actual proof?

When we speak of showing actual proof, it doesn't mean we have to try to put on a show of being any more knowledgeable or accomplished than we are. It is my hope that, in the manner that best suits your situation, you will prove the validity of this Buddhism by steadily improving in your daily life, your family, place of work and community and by polishing your character. (Faith Into Action, page 4.)

10. Past failure, past small success

It's foolish to be obsessed with past failures. It's just as foolish to be self-satisfied with one's small achievements. Buddhism teaches that the present and the future are what are important, not the past. Buddhism teaches us a spirit of unceasing challenge to win over the present and advance toward the future. Those who neglect this spirit of continual striving steer their lives in a ruinous direction. (Faith Into Action, page 17.)

11. Chant to become people of strong will

Life is a struggle with ourselves. It is a tug-of-war between progress and regression, between happiness and unhappiness. Those short on willpower or self-motivation should chant Daimoku with conviction to become people of strong will who can tackle any problems with seriousness and determination. (Faith Into Action, page 109.)

11. Faith and deadlocks at work and in life

Over the long course of your life, you may at times find yourself in a deadlock at work, at school or in your daily affairs. However, these are phenomena of daily life and society which lie on a different plane than faith and are not themselves the essence of faith. Therefore, you must never allow yourself to be swayed by such superficial matters and risk losing your faith entirely. (Daily Guidance, Volume Three, page 183.)

12. Worldly fame and wealth

Worldly fame and wealth which is not based on Myoho may appear to be sources of happiness for the moment. However, such happiness is merely superficial and cannot last. Through your faith, however, you can change transient, superficial happiness into actual happiness, and temporary enjoyment into everlasting prosperity. Everything boils down to the strength of your faith and the power of your conviction. (Daily Guidance, Volume Three, page 39.)

13. What is faith?

Everything is contained in a single word faith. It encompasses truth, courage, wisdom and good fortune. It includes compassion and humanity as well as peace, culture, and happiness.
Faith is eternal hope; it is the secret to limitless self-development. Faith is the most basic principle of growth. (Discussions On Youth, Volume 2, pages 163-164.)

14. Faith and Work

Faith and daily life, faith and work these are not separate things. They are one and the same. To think of them as separate ~ faith is faith, and ~ work is work is theoretical faith. Based on the recognition that work and faith are the same, we should put one hundred percent of our energy into our jobs and one hundred percent into faith, too. When we resolve to do this, we enter the path of victory in life. Faith means to show irrefutable proof of victory amid the realities of society and in our own daily lives. (For Today and Tomorrow, Daily Encouragement, page175.)

15. Strength is Happiness.

Strength is itself victory. In weakness and cowardice there is not happiness. When you wage a struggle, you might win or you might lose. But regardless of the short-term outcome, the very fact of your continuing to struggle is proof of your victory as a human being. A strong spirit, strong faith and strong prayerdeveloping these is victory and the world of Buddhahood. (For Today and Tomorrow, Daily Encouragement, page 50.)

Throwing the Windows Of Our Lives Wide Open!

(You can now subscribe by putting your email in the box to the right!)

Six years ago today, July 30th, 2009,  I made the determination to root sadness and depression out of my life by chanting 2 hours a day. I joined with my dear friend Melissa Bradford, and made a pact to chant 2 hours a day together by texting when we started and ended, called each other frequently, and chanted together in person as often as possible.

During the first hour of Daimoku, I thought about how long I searched to find this practice...how I spent years in bookstores, only finding books on Buddhism that said the cause of my suffering was my desire...and thinking "Buddhism really sounds good on so many levels, but I don't think I want to separate from my desires!" and I kept looking for the practice I KNEW had to exist.
I moved to California searching for this practice, found it in 1985, (Thank you, Kate Randolph! Delores Hepburn, Gene O'Connell, Amos Snell, Diane Douglass and countless others who raised me!) and have gratefully embraced my daily practice ever since.

As I was chanting that first hour of my campaign in 2009, I thought "YES! I WILL alleviate my lifelong depression, AND I will take the world with me and spend the rest of my life proving the validity of this practice through my own life." I envisioned people all over the world sitting down at their computers thinking "Happiness has to be in here somewhere!" and I wanted to help each one find it! So I called the blog Chantforhappiness.com.

Since then I have permanently changed my emotional karma. I have a full range of emotions, I am happy, sad, thoughtful, you name it, but I no longer wake up with a veil of depression blanketing me and thinking "Oh no, I just have to get through this day." (As I had so many days in my life - and I am certain my mother also felt) I have changed this karma by constantly challenging it in front of the Gohonzon and roaring "NOT AGAIN! NOT TODAY! With this Daimoku right now I'M FOREVER VANQUISHING THIS FEELING!" every time it resurfaced. Boom.

And of course, so many things have happened in these six years, great life changes, including a much-needed divorce that has been so amicable it has inspired people to chant, honing my skills as a public speaker and writer, and challenging my life at every moment. Including when my dear son Ben became sick two years ago. Ben began his next journey four weeks ago today. On a full moon.
Nam-myoho-renge-kyo Ben! Nam-myoho-renge-kyo!

Nothing can stop me now. My worst fear has happened, and I am still living, more determined to create value with my life ~  to live my life as an example that anything is possible through chanting the name of the Mystic law, Nam-myoho-renge-kyo with my mentor in life, Daisaku Ikeda, and the glorious SGI at my side.

And YOU, my precious friends, have been with me, comrades in faith! At first one, then ten, then many have come along to read this blog and be inspired to become happy. Your communications have lighted my way as much as my blogs have lighted yours. Together, along with our mentor we care changing the world through our own Human Revolution. You are now 60,000 strong a month and growing. Thank you for sharing this blog and your heart with the world, and with me!

In the July 3rd World Tribune, Daisaku Ikeda states:

"The Buddhist principle
of three thousand realms in a single moment of life
teaches us that
each moment contains possibilities as vast as the universe. Nichiren Daishonin writes,
"As life does not go beyond the moment,
the Buddha expounded the blessings
that come from a single moment of rejoicing
[on hearing the Lotus Sutra]"
("Embracing the Lotus Sutra" The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, vol.1, p. 62).

Don't let the present moment slip by.
Like throwing the windows wide open,
open your lives to the fullest,
and manifest the joy-filled
wisdom and power
of the Buddha.
Faith in the Mystic Law enables us to do this.
Every moment is a challenge,
every moment is a win-or-lose struggle.
It's a waste to limit your potential
by locking yourself away
and letting yourself be ruled by fear,
Challenge yourself
with an eager and optimistic spirit.

When things are tough,
warmly encourage one another as good friends in faith,
and move resolutely toward victory
by bringing forth
the invincible power of the Buddha and the Law
through the dynamic power of faith and practice."

From the Essay "July 3rd and the Spirit of mentor and Disciple" by President Ikeda, in the July 3rd, 2015 World Tribune, page 4

Here is my first post:

Join me!
I chant Nam Myoho Renge Kyo (pronounced Nahm Meeyoho Raingay Kyo)
It means - I fuse my life with the law of cause and effect through sound vibration, or I am one with the flow of life, or I am the Buddha myself! Chanting these words has a profound and practical impact on my life....and it can on anyone's life.
When you chant these words you tap into the eternal universe that's already inside you...the one you know is there, that you've always known is there. Chanting these words allows you to tap the great power you have always had.
On October 20th of 2009 I will have been chanting these words every day...twice a day for 25 years! Between now and October 20th I will be chanting two hours every single day. By October 20th I will have chanted a million daimoku (pron: diemoku, and it means chanting Nam Myoho Renge Kyo over and over) with a goal to accomplish many dreams:

Here are my determinations:
I wish to inspire others through sharing my heart, my struggles and my successes.
I wish to share the heart of my mentor Daisaku Ikeda (President of the Soka Gakkai International) with the world.
I will release my life from the underlying sadness I have always felt...the sadness that has no name and no real cause. I believe I was born with this sadness, and that it is my mission in this life to free myself from it.
I will have a body that is pain free! I will be able to move in any way I want. For several years I have been battling with a painful right leg. I believe it is arthritis, but I keep thinking I can solve the pain through some other means than surgery. I have never had surgery and never want to have it! (I completed this surgery in 2010 and have been pain-free ever since)
I will be on the way to losing the rest of the weight I've been challenged with my entire life. (I've already lost 50 pounds).
I will naturally attract opportunities that delight me!
I will make lots of new friends and connections!
I will become a published author!

When One Sun Rises Everything is Illuminated

I took this picture from a friend's condo overlooking Lake Michigan in Chicago. I call it
"The sun is an exclamation mark!"

"When one sun rises
everything is illuminated."

For many years that has been my favorite quote from my mentor, Daisaku Ikeda.
He has proven it with his life, and we are all proving it with ours.
I, along with so many of you who share your hearts with me each day, live our lives with this in mind, with our vow to accomplish kosen-rufu in mind.

Our lives do illuminate the world.

For almost six years, I have shared my life with you. Not for accolades or money, but to be an example, and reach people who are searching for answers, searching for a positive and practical practice for their lives.

Lately, I am hearing from more and more of you who found this practice, and got connected to the SGI through this blog. Bravo! And welcome!
You are why I write this blog!

I've also heard from others who were practicing alone and after my many appeals to join the SGI decided to join and are now practicing in a District. Bravo!
You are why I write this blog!

And I hear from you who are bravely facing and challenging your life and you jumpstart your practice by reading these words...who chant with renewed vigor...and do more shakubuku.
Bravo!
It is for you I write this blog.

Let me remind you, once again, that these words are mine, and I don't represent the SGI in an official capacity, except as a member who loves the organization and bases her heart on Sensei's heart.

May 3rd has come and gone and many of us made Daimoku targets and goals towards this date. What do we do if our targets weren't achieved? We keep chanting! I am still chanting 2 hours a day and am as determined as ever to break through. I will never give up.

So every day I am reading the words of my mentor, and studying the Gosho. I am attending meetings and encouraging others. Last week I chanted every day with my dear friend Mary. I can see the difference in her face! And she is continuing to chant every day twice a day.

As far as I'm concerned, consistent faith, practice, and study, (which includes shakubuku), are the keys. From my early days as a YWD emcee, I presented "faith, practice and study" at meetings. I continue to strengthen my practice along with you. It is an honor to know you!
Go Buddha Go!

"When one sun rises, everything is illuminated."

PowerPrayer for Overcoming Obstacles!

Happy Saint Patrick's Day!
May the Luck of the Irish be with you!
And, as we say in Chicago,
EVERYONE is Irish on St. Patrick's Day!

As you may know, I have responded to your requests to have chantforhappiness.com sent directly to your inboxes.
I have heard from many of you in the last few days and I really appreciate it!

I would like to meet you all...to talk with you...to see you...or even just talk on the phone. Getting blogs sent to you was the first step. Now I'm working on a website that can make more connections happen.  I've been chanting to find a great web guru for some time and now I've found her. Thanks Lynn!

Right now, more people than ever are reading Chantforhappiness.com. We have close to 40k readers and new subscribers are joining every day. My mission for this blog is to reach all who are longing for real solutions to their problems. Chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo works! Thank you all for sharing this blog, subscribing (see button at the right) and working together to create a world of peace and happiness for all!

As you know, in any worthy endeavor/breakthrough ~ obstacles HAVE to arise.
After I posted yesterday's powerful PowerPrayer for Youth I talked to my son Ben, and he was not doing very well.
So I grasped the handles of my faith and dug in with Daimoku.
I chanted for two more hours (after my two in the morning) and Monday morning I chanted another two hours with this PowerPrayer below in mind. When I connected with him after I chanted, he was much better.

Obstacles are a natural function of life. And the important question is this ~ Can we see problems for what they are, necessary obstacles to FUEL our determination and make us focus our minds while chanting...And deepen our faith!? Or are we FOOLED by them into thinking "Oh no...this is never going to work out." then give up?
It is up to each of us to either determine to win, or just succumb to losing.

The first step is recognizing them for what they are:
"When devilish functions are recognized for what they are, they lose their power."
Daisaku Ikeda, June 2013, Living Buddhism page 23.

The second step is rousing our determination and roaring from the depths of our lives with the full force of the Nam-myoho-renge-kyo we are!

Please do not copy and paste this PowerPrayer. If you wish to share it please cut and paste the url or share it using the buttons at the bottom of the post.
Please email chantforhappiness@gmail.com with your victories from using these PowerPrayers!

Appreciation is the Key to happiness!

It's true! No matter how many times we hear that appreciation is the key to happiness, we have to hear it again, and again, and again!
Otherwise our patterns of complaining can seep back into our lives. For today, let's challenge ourselves to not complain- even once!

What a glorious mission we are all on. All of us Bodhisattvas of the Earth, all of us who chant the name of the Mystic Law...all of us fighting our own negativity and winning as often as we possibly can!

Thank you all for your fellowship. Thank you all for you fellowship to each other, and the peace you create in your communities and in your families.

Today is my birthday and I feel all the love around me, and I feel the love and happiness I generate every day from inside of my life.

We are all so much more precious than we know. For today I am offering you the well-known quote from Mairianne Williamson that is often attributed to nelson Mandela. Let your light shine!

“Our deepest fear

is not that we are inadequate.

Our deepest fear

is that we are powerful beyond measure.

It is our light,

not our darkness that most frightens us.

We ask ourselves,

'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?'

Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God.

Your playing small does not serve the world.

There is nothing enlightened about shrinking

so that other people won't feel insecure around you.

We are all meant to shine, as children do.

We were born to make manifest the glory of God

that is within us.

It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone.

And as we let our own light shine,

we unconsciously give other people

permission to do the same.

As we are liberated from our own fear,

our presence automatically liberates others.”

The More You Chant the More You WANT to Chant!

Have you ever experienced this phenomenon...that the more you chant the more you want to chant?

I am in this phase right now. Every morning I just don't want to stop! I can feel the power welling forth from my life.

I can feel myself getting stronger and wiser and more courageous. I am able to bat down sadness...or depression...or fear before it takes root. If I start to feel sad I know just what to do...take a walk...chant. It's immediate. I am not dwelling in the land of sadness that used to engulf me on a daily basis. That is over. Nam-myoho-renge-kyo.

What is so great about this practice is we can change our basic life tendencies that make us unhappy. We Buddhists, we KNOW that our biggest demons are our own negativity. We KNOW that the power of creating happiness comes from within.

We just have to continually muster the power to overcome that negativity...no matter WHAT is going on in our lives. We need to have enough Daimoku (Nam-myoho-renge-kyo) on board so that when our inner demons arise (fear, anger, stupidity, depression, defeat...) when THOSE arise we RISE UP STRONGER through accessing our own power...through chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, studying and encouraging others!

It is a wonderful way of living. So worth-while! And we know, that no matter what the effects are TODAY, that we are creating a life of splendor and beauty and happiness.

I am just like you. I have changed some major things. And I am working on some others.

I wish I had a a man to love in my life...a deep...everlasting love. So many of you write me about this, and I know how hard it is. Trust me. Lately I seem to attract men who fall head over heels for me and then disappear. But I will not be defeated. I choose to be amused. And I know he's coming. I know I will have my kosen-rufu partner, and I know you will have yours...as long as we don't give up.

If you have an inspiring story to share with us please send it to me at chantforhappiness@gmail.com so you can inspire readers all over the world!

Daily Guidance ~ Daimoku First!

BUDDHISM is reason. And faith is manifested in daily life. Getting enough sleep so that we can wake up refreshed and ready for the new day's challenges is very important for good health. We practise Buddhism so that we can enjoy good health and happiness.

IT is important to be wise. Having people point out your shortcomings and help you weed out your bad habits at the root, is in the long run, a great help to you. If the roots of those bad habits remain, they will gradually begin to affect your life more and more adversely, moving you in a harmful destructive direction.

ONLY women who possess a philosophy that allows them to have a sound view of life, society and the universe, will be able to open a true "era of women". Without such a solid philosophy, you will not be able to make lasting contributions to society nor lead your families and those around you to happiness.

YOU are all important people who are opening the path to a new age in your respective countries. In order that you may fulfil that mission, please apply yourselves to and make a thorough study of all important issues in life. I hope that, taking the lead, you will diligently work to polish your intelligence and character.

IT is important to bring about what one has determined; herein lies the Buddhist practice. This is the key to one's happiness and to advancing one's human revolution.

Nam-myoho-renge-kyo PowerPrayer for Overcoming Our BIGGEST PROBLEMS

What do we do when we have a problem that looks like it is bigger than Nam-myoho-renge-kyo? (The rhythm of life itself - learn more about chanting by clicking the SGI-USA link to the right)
Have you ever had one of those? When you think to yourself...
"Oh well, all those other Buddhists,
they've never seen THIS problem."
And although you have seen results from your practice, year after year, somehow you think THIS problem is different. THIS problem is too much for the Gohonzon. In your heart you know that nothing is more powerful than your prayer...but also, in your heart, you are struggling to summon absolute faith that Nam-myoho-renge-kyo can overcome THIS one?

What do you do?

The answer to this question lies in our SGI organization. It is precisely for this reason, and many others, that we practice together.

This week, as I was going from one speaking gig to another (I LOVE public speaking - my current topic is The BLUE ZONES, What the world's oldest people have to teach us about living long, happy, healthy lives.) I was overcome with emotion about the problem I am facing.
So I called a Buddhist friend who had faced a similar problem and triumphed over it.

She said
"This is just another opportunity for your life to stand up and tell your fundamental darkness who is BOSS. This is just another WAVE, just another WAVE. You MUST stand up to it. You must chant with the conviction that there is no other way than your victory. You must summon that conviction from within your heart."

Okay....

I couldn't wait to get home to chant.

And I chanted with absolute conviction that my prayer...this very moment was EXACTLY the breakthrough I needed to solve the problem and to END MY SUFFERING over the problem.

And I have felt renewed confidence and vigor ever since.

Whatever you are facing...It is just another wave. Stand UP to it!

PowerPrayer for
Overcoming Our BIGGEST Problems
by Jamie Lee SIlver from Chantforhappiness.com

Read this before chanting and summon your inner conviction. These exact words are not important - the strength of your chanting and your heart IS important!

Life~ !!!
Fundamental Darkness ~ doubt ~ fear ~
that exists in my life and in the lives of others
YOU ARE NO MATCH FOR NAM MYOHO RENGE KYO
THIS Daimoku,
right her, right now
is obliterating my fundamental darkness and the world's fundamental darkness
and clearing the path for ______________________.
I claim my victory
I claim my life
I feel Nam-myoho-renge-kyo
flowing from within my life
to all around me.
I shine like the sun
I show proof of this victory right now
I will win over this problem
and I use this experience to help others~!!!
RIght here!
Right NOW
I VOW TO WIN~ No Matter what!

Daily Guidance by Daisaku Ikeda

NICHIREN DAISHONIN stated in the Gosho, "Neither the pure land and
hell exists outside ourselves; both lie within our own hearts." (MW2,
p 239) Everything depends upon one's inner life, or ichinen.
Therefore, what is important is one's heart. No matter how
unfavourable the situation, it can be transformed into "the pure land"
if you courageously address the problem by deciding that it is your
Buddhist practice to develop yourself.

YOU must always maintain a seeking spirit. "Seeking the way" in
Buddhism is an attitude that leads to profound happiness. Remember
that a spirit to always seek the Law for the sake of your daily
self-improvement is actual proof of your faith itself.

FAITH is the greatest of all treasures. Passing on correct faith to
your children is the surest way for both parent and child and for the
entire family as well, to walk the path of eternal happiness.

THE sun burns its own mass as fuel in order to illuminate the cosmic
darkness, bring its light to the moon and the planets. Similarly, the
courage of one individual who possesses a sprit that burns like the
sun will touch and inspire countless others. This is the unchanging
formula for achieving the spread of the Law, the most difficult of all
undertakings.

TO encounter persecution because of one's faith is in fact a wonderful
thing. It is precisely one struggles to overcome hardships that one is
able to create integrity. In an environment that is monotonous and
placid, stagnancy and degeneration may overtake vivacity. It is
because there are storms of great struggles that the blue sky of
existence opens up and fresh vigour wells forth in one's life.

Akema Bailey-Haynie's Family Experience ~ One Change in Our Hearts Can Transform our Lives ~

In the February Living Buddhism magazine there is an article about Faith for a Harmonious Family with a section written by our new National Women's Division Leader Akemi Bailey-Haynie.

She said that when she was 17, she and her sister were working on activities in 1980 to welcome President Ikeda to Chicago for the 'Capture the Spirit Festival." Their father showed up drunk, clinging to the wall, and screaming at her and her sister. The two of them were crying in embarrassment and despair.

"When we spoke to a senior in faith, he encouraged us to use prayer to transform how we felt about our father. It was perhaps our first lesson in the "oneness of life and its environment.

"That night, my sister and I prayed sincerely about this point and were able to summon our appreciation for even having a father. As if responding to the transformation that occurred in our lives, the next morning we found our father sitting at the kitchen table, cleanly shaven and wearing a suit, reading the newspaper. We could not believe our eyes! He signed up to attend Alcoholics Anonymous that day, and everything began to change from there.

"It took years of practice for me to realize that, because my father terrorized our home, he guaranteed our absolute happiness. He taught me that I could transform anything with faith."

Perseverance ~ Some Quotes from Daisaku Ikeda

The sun WILL rise!

Perseverance

by Daisaku Ikeda:

"No matter what the circumstances,
you should never concede defeat.
Never conclude that you've reached a dead-end,
that everything is finished.

You possess a glorious future.

Precisely because of that,
you must persevere and study.

Life is eternal.
We need to focus
on the two existences of the present and the future
and not get caught up in worry about the past.
We must always have the spirit to begin anew
"from this moment,"
to initiate a new struggle each day."

From Faith in Action page 146.

"We must put down strong roots,
we must be strong.
Inner strength is a prerequisite for happiness,
a prerequisite for upholding justice and one's beliefs.
One of the Buddha's titles is "He Who Can Forebear."
To courageously endure,
persevere and overcome all difficulties
~ the Buddha,
is the ultimate embodiment of the virtue of forbearance. The power of faith gives us the strength
to weather and survive any storm.
Perseverance is the essence of a Buddha."

Faith in Action, by Daisaku Ikeda, page 147.

Here in Chicago we are expecting another winter storm. And many of us are weathering storms of our own all over the world. I know this from your emails. As Daisaku Ikeda says, it is important to persevere and never give up. No matter what.  We are not here to master suffering. We have the opportunity to challenge our fate every morning during Gongyo and head out cheerfully to face whatever the day may bring. I hope that no matter what we are facing, that we can bring a smile to all we meet. Such is the way of the Buddha.

Today I leave you with my favorite quote
from Daisaku Ikeda:

"When one sun rises,
everything is illuminated."
