How to get Back on Track in Daimoku and Really Connect to Our Prayer

I spoke with a member today who had a great question.

She asked: "Jamie, do you feel like it's gotten harder to concentrate these days while chanting? I used to be able to really focus and now, with all the news and everything that's going on, it feels harder and harder to chant."

And I said, Yes, I know just what you're talking about! But there's hope. Here's what I do when I'm feeling scattered in front of the Gohonzon. First of all, I take my phone and put it in the other room. I don't use it to time my chanting. I use a clock. I get that phone out of my space.

And, start in small increments. Say to yourself "I'm going to chant 5 minutes of absolutely uninterrupted daimoku. I'm not going to get up for water, I'm not going to use the bathroom, or check Facebook. No. For this 5 minutes, I will be glued to the Gohonzon! And when I do that 5 minutes I go for another, and another, and then I can reach my goals. Start small. And go for it!

I told her about the umpteen BILLIONS OF BUDDHAS who are joining us when we chant. The first prayer I have in the morning is to greet those Buddhas with my life, Buddha to Buddha. It feels so good.

And refresh your goals. It always helps.

Let's get our MOJO back. For ourselves. For the Youth. For the world! Peace!

Great Insights from Kate Randolph

My Dear friend Kate

Hello, my friends! Thanks for all the emails prodding me back into writing. You have always been on my mind!

I'm sitting here in paradise on St. Pete Beach with a few moments on my hands because I'm off work today. I have a great full-time job helping families go through the difficult maze of figuring out the best place for their loved one to live when they can no longer take care of themselves. I enjoy giving people hope, changing the lives of seniors, and infusing love into my community.

There's so much to share! Ben's Memorial Mile (Bensmemorialmile.com) took place in June with hundreds of attendees running, walking, playing and having fun in my son Ben's name. We are about to reach our goal of contributing $50,000 for research to cure schizophrenia, and taking concrete action to prevent suicide through "Hope for the Day." We're already planning an amazing event in Downers Grove, Illinois, USA next June. I'll keep you posted.

And, many of you know that Kate Randolph is battling the same kind of cancer that just killed John McCain, a glioblastoma brain tumor. Kate was diagnosed right after we went to the Florida Nature Culture Center together in November of 2017. She's challenging three hours of daimoku (chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo) a day, and is fighting a fierce battle.

The other day I reached her in LA and she had important words for all for us when I told her about a goal I'm determined to reach. Kate said:

"There's only one thing you need to do.
There's only one prayer you need to have. Along with chanting for the youth of the world and the 50K Lions of Justice Festivals in America and around the world,

Chant for
absolute and total conviction
 in your Buddha Nature

and everything you want will fall in line.
Don't keep searching for what you desire -
use this prayer, use the power of your daimoku.
Pray that THIS TIME you are changing your karma forever...for you, for your parents,
for your descendants.
Pray that THIS PRAYER changes your karma forever."

Let that sink in!

I'll tell you it's a challenge. When I'm chanting I latch onto that prayer, and I'm quickly pulled off of it by some distraction (fundamental darkness) in my mind. But it's real. And powerful. It takes strong determination to stay on this prayer...and let other prayers bubble up...for my family, my coworkers, the youth of the world. It's a daily challenge to keep praying while chanting - not just letting my mind wander and wondering about stuff. But that's where the magic is...the sustained launching of our prayer on the wings of Daimoku.

I hope this post finds you well...and that you keep strong determination. As Nichiren Daishonin states in the Gosho Letter to Nikke,
"Chanting nam-myoho-renge-kyo is like the roar of a lion. What sickness can, therefore, be an obstacle?"

Whatever you are facing don't give up. Don't give up! We are here for a reason. We chose this life. We even chose our problems. In the August 17th World Tribune on page 7, Daisaku Ikeda, my mentor in life, quotes the words of the Argentine poet Almafuerte:

"Sometimes a great destiny sleeps to be awakened by anguish."
He goes on to say:
"Buddhism teaches that suffering is the springboard to enlightenment. No one is free from problems and worries - nor is any family or region.
"Life is a struggle against problems. What's important is how we solve the problems that weigh down on us. We need to call forth all our wisdom and make repeated efforts to overcome those problems and reach the victory that lies beyond them.
"Dreaming about what life might be like if only you didn't have any problems is just an escape from reality into a fantasy realm. It only leads to defeat in life. People who are always making positive efforts, thinking about how to overcome each problem and transform it into a source of value and victory are the winners in life.
"Your resolve determines your life. I hope you will all be great actors in your own dramas of victory, brilliantly proving this truth, and be people who encourage and impart self-confidence to everyone around you."

Yes! Write that drama brilliantly! Smile and carry on! Chant and study and encourage your fellow members! Sending love to you!

What does Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo mean, and why do we chant it?

What does Nam-myoho-renge-kyo mean,
and why do we chant it?

By Jamie Lee Silver of ChantforHappiness.com -

The literal translation of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is:

"I fuse my life
with the Mystic Law
 of cause and effect
through sound vibration."

Nam-myoho-renge-kyo
is the title of the Lotus Sutra,
the Buddha's highest teaching
that declares
ALL people possess the Buddha Nature...
all people ARE Buddhas...
and we can access our own Buddhahood ~ our inherent wisdom, determination, power to take the best action for our lives while benefiting others, sense of vitality and ability to make a difference.
We can create fulfillment, happiness,
and the strength to turn
EVERY POISON INTO MEDICINE
~by chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo.

That's it. We don't need to change our diets, memorize lists of paths, change our lifestyles, shave our heads, wear robes, or "purify our desires." This form of Buddhism is radically different than most forms you may have encountered. SGI (Soka Gakkai Buddhism is accessible to ALL.

AND the most important aspect of our prayer is to do our own human revolution...to change the very core of our lives...change our karma, and by doing so, change the world around us as well.
We chant for "Kosen-Rufu," a world of respect for all life, and for all who are suffering to be happy. Through our own happiness, we create happiness for all. We can all win in life together.

When we chant, we harness the energy that is our birthright. And we chant twice a day, every single day, to get and keep our lives in rhythm.

When we are in rhythm we are in the right place at the right time... to find out about and get the job...or to meet the man of our dreams...or to protect our child from danger. When we are in rhythm, life isn't so much of a struggle as it is a joy...we see the beauty in everything and we feel our lives overflowing with appreciation.

In fact, we view obstacles themselves as benefits, as strange as that may sound....because obstacles make us chant more, and when we chant more we draw even higher life conditions and deeper satisfaction into our lives.

What can we chant FOR?
Anything. Make sure to write your list, and rewrite it when you achieve those goals. Ultimately, our goal is to change our own selves...to overcome our doubt and negativity, and to experience life as the Buddhas we are. When WE change, our environment changes. We are all interconnected.

We chant for others,
we chant for our planet,
our countries, and ourselves.
We can chant for whatever our desire may be...even if it might not be the "right" desire for us. In the act of chanting, we will change our karma and our desires themselves will naturally begin to shift. We will open our lives to the deeper wisdom within...the deeper yearning, the REAL desires that we have forgotten or given up on. We will grow. We will prosper and we will blossom.

We will gain the wisdom of the right action to take - because ACTION springs from wisdom.

The challenge is...we need to DO it. We have to chant to bring all this rhythm and harmony out. And that's why we practice together as an organization, the SGI, The Soka Gakkai, our fellowship of friends who support each other, chant for each other, and create a new Soka family for each practitioner. We are so fortunate.

We are in this life together...sharing our challenges and our successes. If you are not yet connected to the SGI please go to sgi-usa.com and find your local members. You will be so glad you did.
If you live in or around St. Pete Beach Florida you can connect with me through chantforhappiness@gmail.com.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Some Powerful Quotes from Daisaku Ikeda:
THIS moment, this instant, is important,
not some unknown time in the future.
Today, this very day is what matters.
You must put your whole being
into the time that exists now.
For future victory rests in the present moment.
BUDDHISM holds that
everything is in a constant state of flux.
Thus, the question is
whether we are to accept change passively
and be swept away by it,
or whether we are to take the lead
and create positive changes on our own initiative.
While conservatism and self-protection
might be likened to winter, night and death,
the spirit of pioneering and attempting to realize
the ideals evokes the images of spring,
morning and birth.
Do gongyo and chant daimoku with a fresh spirit.
And, filled with renewed vitality,
build a history of accumulating fresh benefit.
"At That Time" Our Determination Changes Everything!
(You can subscribe to this blog by putting your email in the box to the right)
(I write this blog to share my journey, and use my life as an example that anything is possible throuch chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. I've been practicing Buddhism for 33 years with the SGI, but these writings, this blog, are from my heart to yours and not officially endorsed by any organization)
Deciding to "Stand Up and Fight" Changes Everything!
The beginning of the "Expedient Means" chapter of the Lotus Sutra, which we recite during morning and evening Gongyo begins with the phrase "At that time the World Honored One calmly arose from his samadhi and addressed Shariputra"
In "The Heart of the Lotus Sutra" Daisaku Ikeda states:
"In terms of our practice, therefore, I would like to stress that "that time" exists only when we pray to the Gohonzon and manifest determination and awareness of our mission for kosen-rufu. (World peace through our own human revolution - using our problems to FUEL our happiness and light the way of inspiration for all by showing the impossible is possible through our lives, notes mine, js)
We have to make a determination,
pray and take action.
Unless we do so,
our environment will not change in the least,
though five or ten years may pass,
that time" will never arrive.
Our single minded determination for kosen rufu,
(a world of respect for all beings ~ JS)
and that alone,
creates the "time."
"That time" is
when we set our lives in motion,
when we stand up
of our own volition and by our own will and strength. "That time
is when we summon forth strong faith
and take our place on the grand stage of kosen-rufu.
Right now we are gathering as an organization with the determination to unite 50,000 youth in November of 2018 to come together and realize the power of their own lives to change the world, and create lives of fulfillment and happiness through chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo.
We can EACH make our own determination to change that one thing in our lives that we haven't changed yet. Mine is fear, and good health. They are both tied together for me. And drawing my kosen-rufu partner to me. Right now I have just begun a job marketing a Senior Assisted Living Community. I see many people whose lives have changed due to health concerns.
For the first few weeks on the job it was hard to do evening gongyo because I'd come home so tired. And gradually my life became harder and harder. So now, I make a fresh determination to chant every morning and evening no matter how tired I am. Life will become easier and easier. I know this from past experience...
If you're not chanting every morning and every evening, doing shakubuku and studying please do it. Your life will become YOURS in so many ways.
This morning I am bringing two new girlfriends and one of my favorite friends-in-faith to Kosen-rufu gongyo at the Tampa Bay Center. I hope you enjoy your kosen rufu gongyo, too!
It's now or never! We need to bring forth our own wealth of youthfulness as we chant and take action for the youth of the world!
Goethe writes,
"The moment alone is decisive;
Fixes the life of man,
and his further destiny settles."
"That time" is the moment you resolve
from the depths of your heart:
"Now I will stand up and fight!"
From that moment,
your destiny changes.
Your life develops.
History begins. "
(note from Jamie: When I sit in front of my Gohonzon, and look into the mirror of my life... I chant in appreciation for my problems and VOW to show actual proof to others that the impossible is possible, and that each one of my problems leads us closer to a world of happiness for all...because one more woman stood up and said "NO WAY!" "I will WIN!" I picture the outcome already secure and chant in happiness.)
Lighting the Lamp of Hope from Florida with Career Success
So I'm almost a month into my job and it's incredibly exciting. I've already produced a lot of success, and I take my smile everywhere I go. In all things "Our success is our energy. Our energy is our success." that is my belief, and those are my words.
When we freely express our Buddha nature everything flowers around us. We can create a place for the flowers of our life to bloom.
Just a little background:
As many of you know, In 2009, I created this blog to show actual proof through my own life, to inspire people to learn about chanting, and to inspire my beloved fellow practitioners all over the world. This is not an easy practice, but when we practice correctly, our lives overflow with benefit - so it's worth the work.
We get up early...so we can chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo to awaken the Buddha in our hearts, and set our sights on what is true. We chant the truth in our hearts and make determinations towards this day, and into the future. We tell our lives what we want, for Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is our life, and the life and rhythm of the entire universe.
Through this chant we connect...and we summon all the power of the universe into our lives and dreams. Then at night, we chant again and prepare for the next day. We chant for ourselves, we chant for others, we chant for this world.
About five years ago, life was going great, but I was worried about my son Ben. We soon began a roller coaster ride of trying to keep him alive through a terrible illness. Schizophrenia. And in July of 2015, my beloved Ben succumbed to the illness and took his life. My blog of July 4th, 2015 was my declaration that I would turn poison into medicine. The worst problem can turn into the best benefit. Even this.
Fast forward, I created Bensmemorialmile.com, where we've raised almost 50K for Schizophrenia research and Suicide prevention, and I moved from Chicago to St. Pete Beach Florida where I live overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. I did not work for a year and lived off the saving that resulted from my many years of fortune accumulated through almost 33 years of practice. (This Friday, October 20th, is my 33rd anniversary of receiving the Gohonzon).
In time, I began to chant for my next job.
I chanted for a job that would use all my talents,  where I'd be surrounded by people who inspire me, where I could do public speaking and have a great and growing income, where I could let the light of my life shine and do shakubuku with my life while making new friends, and where I could be HAPPY.
And I was offered many jobs...and found one I accepted.
Now I'm a few weeks into it, and I am having joyful success that is being recognized and applauded. I am surrounded by helpful and inspiring people, and I am having fun while doing good work that helps people.
And the key is to continue chanting to SEE my life, and to expand in my capacity to help others, to do shakubuku (I've not yet shared my Buddhist practice at work, but they are seeing my life shine), and to humbly keep chanting to see what I'm doing wrong so I can correct it and continue moving forward.
I am not perfect, but I chant to learn from my errors and move on. And I chant to love myself completely through it all! I'm chanting each day for the happiness of all of my coworkers as we create this beautiful community that helps seniors.
I am spreading the joyful light of hope, appreciation and love that I feel inside all the time. I have also once again been able to raise my contribution level to the SGI. I know this creates even more fortune and just makes me happy!
Whatever you are facing, you can joyfully create the life of your dreams as you bask in appreciation and continue to devote your life to this practice, shakubuku, study, and creating happiness for yourself and others.
Go Buddha go and never give up!
The Life-Giving Power of Each Character of Gongyo
(You can now subscribe to this blog by putting your email address into the box to the right)
Hello friends, I evacuated Florida today. I drove 11 hours in some really bad traffic and made it to halfway to Asheville, North Carolina where I'll stay with my Dad and Jan. I figure, even if the hurricane does not come to St. Pete Beach, I'll have a nice visit with my family. Thanks for your messages! All my best to you. There is so much to chant about...and remember...all real change starts with our own human revolution!
In the Gosho "Letter to Horen," the Daishonin describes the characters of the Lotus Sutra as individual Buddhas emitting beams of light...able to find all those, living and dead, with whom we are connected.
Wow.
What a great thing to learn about while we are all striving to perfect our Gongyo and deepen our faith.
Daisaku Ikeda states in Living Buddhism,
June 2015, page 32:
"...Through chanting the daimoku of the Lotus Sutra, Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, we can transmit benefit even to deceased family members, relatives, friends or acquaintances who may have opposed our Buddhist practice - benefit that will warmly embrace them and lead them to a state of profound peace and comfort.
Similarly, through the power of the Mystic Law, our family members and friends who have passed away in the course of the journey for kosen-rufu - whether from illness or as a result of unexpected accidents or natural disasters - will also be able to enter the path of Buddhahood.
The best offering we can make for the eternal happiness of the departed is to live fully and strive vibrantly for kosen-rufu in their stead..."
"The Daishonin says that
each of the 510 characters
of the verse section
of the "Life Span" chapter
of the Lotus Sutra,
from "ji ga toku burrai"
(Since I attained Buddhahood) (LSOC, 270)
to "soku joju busshin"
(quickly acquire the body of the Buddha) (LSOC, 273), changes into a sun
and then into a Buddha.
It emits great beams of light
that pervade every corner of the universe,
finding Kyoshin's father wherever he might be
and illuminating him
(see WND-I, 517-18).
In other words,
each chapter
of the verse section of the "LifeSpan" chapter
recited by Kyoshin
becomes the Buddha,
shining with the brilliant light of compassion
that reaches his deceased father
in whatever state of being he may reside,
relieving him of his suffering
and guiding him to enlightenment."
What a wonderful life-giving practice we have! Who do you want to reach with your Daimoku today?
Having our Daimoku be Stronger Than Our Fears
I know it's been a long, ling time since I last wrote. During this time I produced Ben's Memorial Mile in Chicago,  and moved from a furnished studio to a large unfurnished one-bedroom here in St. Pete Beach.
I am so grateful that my son Aaron was here to help. He helped me decide on this beautiful place right here overlooking the Gulf of Mexico, and brought me to all kinds of places to buy the things I needed...a bed...table and chairs...a couch. It was great to have him here.
Now he's back in Phoenix doing all sorts of YMD activities and I'm her on my Lanai watching the storm roll in.
Lately I've been focusing on seeing the truth in my life...seeing who I am...my beauty...my flaws...and the tendencies that serve, and don't serve me. I'm looking for a job and getting read to restart my career as a Life-Cycle Celebrant. And, in the meantime, my phone and my computer are acting up. Yikes!
I've been challenging myself to chant three hours in a row at least once a week. This Saturday I accomplished that goal.
Many of you write to me and tell me you're looking for a job, and ask me how to chant. I can share my experiences with you but I can't tell you how to chant. Please see your local leaders for encouragement. :)
But I can tell you how I am chanting to break through.
My determination is to use my favorite talents...all of them...to make the biggest difference I can...to do kosen-rufu in every possible way and to touch as many people with my positive energy and make the money I need to make. Somehow, with my prayers to the Gohonzon, all this will come to pass. I'm chanting every morning and evening, reading the Gosho every day, shakubukuing everyone I meet, handing out Nam-myoho-renge-kyo cards and encouraging others.
I am chanting to have my daimoku overcome my fear. Just like you. And I'm chanting for youth! I've overcome so much since I began this blog. Now it's time for another breakthrough. Cheers to you!
How to Break Through Those Walls!
(You can now subscribe to this blog by posting your email in the box to the right)
Have you ever felt like you were stopped at every turn? That, somehow there were thick walls between you and everything you want? Have you ever been making positive causes, chanting, and still the walls getting higher and higher?
I have felt walled in lately - and I am in the process of breaking through - I know it. I know there's a bright expanse on the other side of these walls!
Here's how I am turning these walls into tiny little pebbles that I will just step over.
This week I made a call to one of my treasured friends in faith, and she had some wise words for me.
She said that when she was experiencing walls, she learned that there was something deep in her life, and in her character...at the very depths of her human revolution that needed to change. She asked me some questions and I could clearly see the action I needed to take, and the Daimoku I needed to chant.
I went to the Gohonzon and chanted to learn what I needed to change. Some things came to mind...my tendency to get defensive in the face of criticism, and the need to develop the skill of understanding the other person's point of view and not letting my emotions overrun my brain. In front of the Gohonzon I chanted with all my heart to have the courage to see my shortcomings...and the courage to change them.
As James Hermann in Chicago once said: "We don't chant so we can say "That's just the way I am." We chant to CHANGE  what we see needs to be changed!
So, for the past few days, I've been chanting three hours a day and I am on the verge of a huge breakthrough! I know this because three of my good friends are coming to the meeting on Tuesday when I will be giving my experience.
I also uncovered something important about my finances and made two new dear friends. Treasures of the heart!
It's not complete yet, but I'll tell you all about it when it's done!
Today I fly off for Ben's Memorial Mile! It will be Saturday the 17th of June at Downers Grove North Illinois High School's outdoor track at 5:00. Join us if you can! Here's the link: Bensmemorialmile.com
This week I'll see my whole family and around 500 wonderful friends in Downers Grove. Hope for the Day, National Alliance of Mental Illness, Your Story Counseling and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention will all have booths. There are children's events and a costume mile, great music, laughter, cheers and fun. Al Carius, the coach of the century will be speaking.
It's hard to believe it has been almost two years since my precious boy became eternal!
I can hardly breathe I'm so excited! Nam-myoho-renge-kyo!
"At That Time" Our Determination Changes Everything!
(You can subscribe to this blog by putting your email in the box to the right)
I wrote this blog two years ago. I look at this writing now, and think back to what I was going through at the time. My life, and practice were up against a wall.
(I write this blog to share my journey, and use my life as an example that anything is possible throuch chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. I've been practicing Buddhism for 32 years with the SGI, but these writings, this blog, are from my heart to yours and not officially endorsed by any organization)
Two years ago my 22 year-old son was so sick. He was suffering. And I was fighting with all my light for his life. As many of you know, Ben did not keep his "life" here on earth.
On July 2nd, 2015, he left this plane and became "Our Forever Ben," a voice from beyond that encourages many. No, Ben is not alive here on earth...but he did "win" and continues to win.
Soon after his "death" I began reading the translation of the Sutra in the back of every Gongyo Book. Over and over the Buddha says "I appear to be gone, but I am always here preaching the law."
And I thought "I'm a Buddha, Ben's a Buddha, he is still right here." And I began writing to him and listening for his reply, then writing what I heard. It's so easy...so natural. Anyone can do it. It is Ben's gift to the world and he offers it in the book we wrote together called "Our Forever Ben, One Mom's Letters to her son-in-spirit and his poetic replies" available on Amazon. His words are so beautiful. He is always right here...and everywhere! We still write each other often. I hope our story brings light to many dark hearts.
Here is what I wrote two years ago. Enjoy:
Deciding to "Stand Up and Fight" Changes Everything!
The beginning of the "Expedient Means" chapter of the Lotus Sutra, which we recite during morning and evening Gongyo begins with the phrase "At that time the World Honored One calmly arose from his samadhi and addressed Shariputra"
In "The Heart of the Lotus Sutra" Daisaku Ikeda states:
"In terms of our practice, therefore, I would like to stress that "that time" exists only when we pray to the Gohonzon and manifest determination and awareness of our mission for kosen-rufu. (World peace through our own human revolution - using our problems to FUEL our happiness and light the way of inspiration for all by showing the impossible is possible through our lives, notes mine, js)
We have to make a determination,
pray and take action.
Unless we do so,
our environment will not change in the least,
though five or ten years may pass,
that time" will never arrive.
Our single minded determination for kosen rufu,
(a world of respect for all beings ~ JS)
and that alone,
creates the "time."
"That time" is
when we set our lives in motion,
when we stand up
of our own volition and by our own will and strength. "That time
is when we summon forth strong faith
and take our place on the grand stage of kosen-rufu.
Goethe writes,
"The moment alone is decisive;
Fixes the life of man,
and his further destiny settles."
"That time" is the moment you resolve
from the depths of your heart:
"Now I will stand up and fight!"
From that moment,
your destiny changes.
Your life develops.
History begins. "
(note from Jamie: When I sit in front of my Gohonzon, and look into the mirror of my life... I chant in appreciation for my problems and VOW to show actual proof to others that the impossible is possible, and that each one of my problems leads us closer to a world of happiness for all...because one more woman stood up and said "NO WAY!" "I will WIN!" I picture the outcome already secure and chant in happiness.)
GO Buddha GO! PowerPrayer to MAKE IT HAPPEN. Rock Your World! Change Your Karma!
My view as I write this blog. What a benefit!
(You can subscribe to this blog by putting your email in the box to the right)
We chant for ourselves.
We chant for others.
We chant for this life and this world.
We change our karma
for the sake of changing the whole world's karma.
We are the noble Bodhisattvas of the earth
and Votaries of the Lotus Sutra.
We TELL our lives what we want - in our prayers - while chanting.
We ARE Nam-myoho-renge-kyo!
And....Sometimes it seems like it is taking FOREVER for a benefit to come or an obstacle to go away, doesn't it? Even though we KNOW the answer lies within us - inside our own karma, and in doing our human revolution, sometimes we just have to get mad at our own life and wake those Shoten Zenjin UP! (Shoten Zenjin = protective forces within all life)
In the February 2015 Living Buddhism Magazine
(published by the SGI-USA and available by calling 800-835-4558) one of my favorite Gosho passages appeared. In this Gosho, Nichiren Daishonin has been persecuted by the government and is being taken away to Tatsunokuchi Beach to be beheaded. On the way, he sees a statue of Hachiman.
Nichiren demands they stop at the statue. He looks at Hachiman and shouts:
'Great Boddhisatva Hachiman, are you truly a god?...Now I, Nichiren, am the foremost votary of the Lotus Sutra in all of Japan, and am entirely without guilt...If I am executed tonight and go to the pure land of Eagle Peak, I will dare to report to Shakyamuni Buddha, the lord of teachings, that the Sun Goddess and Great Boddhisatva Hachiman are the deities who have broken their oath to him. If you feel this will go hard with you, you had better do something about it right away!' (WND - 1, 766-67)
Nichiren yells at the Buddhist God and says "you better protect me RIGHT NOW because that is the pledge you made. If I die I will report you! Get to work!" Of course, after he yells at the statue, a huge orb comes out of the sky lighting up the faces of his would-be assassins, they all run scared, and he is saved from death.
Nichiren's strong attitude when he addresses the statue shows us we can summon the forces within our life. We can all pray in front of our own Gohonzons with fury and with fire.
PowerPrayer to MAKE IT HAPPEN!
These words represent some thoughts we can have in mind while chanting. Our minds will naturally fluctuate as we chant, and that is absolutely fine. I offer these PowerPrayers because they represent the moments I am most connected to my desire...and I offer them to help you. They are my unique contribution based on my Bodhisattva vow to use my life to inspire.
"Gohonzon!
Shoten Zenjin!
Life!
SOME KIND OF WAY
this________ HAS TO CHANGE NOW!!!
My life has to move.
I Don't know HOW to make it happen.
And I don't have to know.
I just know it HAS TO!!
Every Daimoku I chant is changing this karma now!
It is time for me to see results in this area.
NOW!
______________________________________________________________________________________________________Nam-myoho-renge-kyo!
We can all summon this fiery attitude at the crucial moment - we are ALL dignified votaries of the Lotus Sutra, we can all command the fundamental forces that are within our lives and represented on the Gohonzon.
When I first wrote this PowerPrayer last year, I was visiting my nephew in St. Petersburg Florida, certain that my life was unfolding JUST as it should. My beloved son Ben had died the summer before, and I was setting out to create my new life...mostly alone, but fortified by this practice and the power of my own life. Through chanting strongly, like THIS, I was able to happily move to this paradise.
As I write this I am looking over the Gulf of Mexico, listening to the waves, and shortly I'll be swimming and walking on the beach. These prayers, this practice made it all happen.
Last year I wrote this: "I am seeing the benefit come from the pain I've been through. Life is getting happier for me, and I have more to look forward to with each passing moment. I will have lots to share with you over the next coming months!" And it was true! By June 30th I was in St. Pete Beach! Nam-myoho-renge-kyo!
Look at the power of YOUR Life!
You can have anything you wish.
You have the power within YOU.
Added bonus: Here's one way to explain the practice for others:
What we Nichiren Buddhists do;
As practitioners of the Lotus Sutra,
we chant the Mystic Law every single day.
Intoning Nam-myoho-renge-kyo
(which means: I fuse my life with the Mystic law of cause and effect through sound vibration) is a noble cause.
It brings forth our greatest human potential,
elevates our life condition, and the life condition and vibration of all of life.
Our life undergoes a complete human revolution...and as our life changes...we change everything. We raise the vibration of the planet.
