Universal Power Prayer for Peace on Earth and Absolute Happiness for ALL

Hello! First of all, I want to make it clear that this blog is written by me, Jamie Lee Silver, and I have been practicing with the incredible SGI organization since the fall of 1985. My mentor in life is Daisaku Ikeda. Every day I chant to realize his dream for kosen-rufu, a world of respect and peace for all. I am a District Leader in the SGI and devote much of my time to chanting with members everywhere. Every blogpost is my own interpretation of this practice and is not an official representation of the Soka Gakkai Organization. It's personal. This blog came from my determination to change my karma, and to be an example for others that the impossible is possible. If I can alleviate depression and anxiety, lose 70 pounds, find my soulmate, and live almost every moment with no fear - then ANYONE can do it. I am not special. But I am devoted to revealing the power inherent in my life through this practice. I chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo every single day. My minimum amount is usually an hour and sometimes much more. (And there are days I can't chant as much ~ this is a lifelong practice, so if one day I only chant a little Daimoku (But I always do morning and evening Gongyo) I redetermine for the next day. I have found that practicing within the embrace of the Soka Gakkai is the only way to go. I cherish my leaders and my members and all my friends in faith. I wholeheartedly encourage you to connect with your friends in faith through the SGI. You can click on the portal to the right to find your local organization. Or email me at chantforhappiness@gmail.com and I can help you.

What is PowerPrayer?

PowerPrayer is our suggested wording to focus on exactly what you want while you chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. As you are chanting, the PowerPrayers come into your mind like arrows and you aim them directly at your chosen targets.

PowerPrayer is also what we have come to call our determination... or … replacement for our continuous conversation in our minds. If you begin to observe your mind with any degree of seriousness you will realize that your life and your thoughts actually do match one another. For instance, If a person prays once, for a rather brief moment in their day, about wanting something they felt astir deep in their heart, but then goes on to spend hours a day complaining— or worse, doubting— that their prayer can take form in the world, their prayer will not manifest. Their prayer, we might say, is not powerful. We have come to realize that it is a power within our own life that answers our prayers and not a “higher power.” When a person beseeches and asks of a “higher power” greater than themselves to grant wishes, they are claiming a role that is vastly inferior to the part of our life that can answer that prayer. Yes, that's right. We repeat, we believe, because we have found it to be true, that it is a power within our own life (that we access through chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo) that answers prayers and grants wishes, and the sooner we realize it, the better. And the more we come to appreciate and enjoy the process, the better.

In the meanwhile, We can use our minds as Buddha-minds; minds-- co-equivalent with the full force of consciousness that we call the universe, minds deep enough in compassion to grant wishes in the most wise and beneficial ways. Minds that
are
that
Powerful.

Become A force for Good

The heart is infinitely compassionate...
its fathomless rudder,
wisdom
—J. Landis

As Nichiren Buddhists we chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo to summon up our fathomless wisdom while steering our life-craft in the direction of our innermost desires. We chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo over and over and over again. We call this chanting Daimoku (Die-MO-Koo). Daimoku means title and the title of the Lotus Sutra (Shakyamuni Buddha’s self-proclaimed highest teaching) is  Myoho-Renge-Kyo.  The founder of this practice, Nichiren Daishonin, added to Myoho-renge-kyo  the syllable Nam which means “I devote my life to.” So, a brief translation of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is, “I devote my life to the mystic law of cause and effect through sound vibration,” or, “I am one with the very rhythm of life.”

“Myoho-renge-kyo is the name of the ultimate mystic truth, and Nam-myoho-renge-kyo  is the name of the life state of Buddhas who embody and reveal this truth.”
p.28 Lectures on “On Attaining Buddhahood in this Lifetime”, Daisaku Ikeda.

It actually becomes very natural over time to focus on a personal PowerPrayer while chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo.  It is nothing more than putting your deepest fundamental wish into action. By chanting and focusing on our most cherished desire, we come to steer our lives with confidence in the direction of Buddhahood. Our lives become lives of immense creativity, wisdom and value, and most of all Love. For as we chant, rhythmically and powerfully, we exude into our environment a music that evokes our deepest, innermost capacity and transforms any manner of poison (problem) into a medicine (benefit), and further, into a nectar (deep happiness).

Universal PowerPrayer for Happiness for ALL

Every Daimoku I chant
reaches every other person who is chanting
I deepen the power of my faith by 10,000
so that all who are chanting can also deepen their faith, spread the word of this great teaching
to those still suffering
become absolutely happy
and create a happy and peaceful world!

I chant that every single person who is chanting
feels the full power
sees the full power
experiences the full power
of this faith in their lives.

I chant for all members to have faith
receive incredible
benefits
and to know, within their DNA itself
within every cell in their body
that this practice works!

I chant for all who are chanting.
May my prayer increase the power of their prayer!

Do You Have a Dream? The Power of the Gohonzon Has No Limits

….Sensei Says - Do You Have A Dream….
“Many of us have some problems that we avoid chanting about, because we are afraid to look at them directly and prefer not to think about them. Others may have dreams locked up in their hearts that they are afraid to admit even to themselves let alone chant for, because they feel they do not deserve to be happy, or because they are afraid of being disappointed should they not succeed in attaining their goal.
Nichiren Daishonin teaches us that the power of the Gohonzon has no limit. It is we who impose limits on it with our doubts and fears. How tragic it would be if, having encountered the Mystic Law, we could not fully enjoy it's benefit because we lacked the courage to pray with all our hearts for what we truly wanted.
Surely nothing would be more bitter than to have to look back over one's life and feel, 'I never accomplished what I really wanted to.'
Nichiren Daishonin, out of his compassion, teaches us how to live so that we will have no regrets. Since we have been fortunate enough to meet the Gohonzon, why don't we place our full trust in it, pray courageously for what we desire and fulfill all our dreams in this lifetime.”

Keeping a High Life Condition

What is a high life condition?

When we can look down at your challenges and problems from above, we have a high life condition. Our challenges seem insignificant and we KNOW the power in our life will keep us advancing. We greet the Gohonzon with a smile and full of appreciation. We are cheerful and full of life.

When our problems loom large, and hover above us feeling like we will be crushed, we have a low life condition. But we are still so lucky, because we know just what to do.

When we feel our life condition sinking we can head to the Gohonzon and chant. We can also call a mentor in faith. I have many people I respect and love, and who can give me that extra added insight I need to fire up my chanting. We can study. I read the Gosho and President' Ikeda's guidance. I pick up the World Tribune or Living Buddhism. I look at my own encouragement on this blog, and read people's inspiring stories. Calling a friend and encouraging THEM also raises our life condition. Chanting Daimoku is the greatest tool. Sometimes we need encouragement to be able to chant more effectively.

A Power Prayer to Raise your Life Condition:

"I am determined to experience each moment as the powerful Buddha I am. I vow to feel the power of Daimoku surging through me. I know that when I am at my best, I can do more to encourage others. I am bringing the best out of my life so that I can be my best and make this world a better place.
I chant to raise my life condition and to experience each moment as the Buddha I am."

Raising our life condition is like this:

We have a challenge or a problem, and it shows up in front of us like a tall wall. At first we may back away and say "That wall is way too tall, I will never get over it!" But when we chant we can feel ourselves raising higher than the wall...lifting up into the air...and we can look down at that wall and suddenly it is a tiny insignificant bump in the road. We have raised our life condition. And we have the power to do this every single day.

As practicing Buddhists we know that all our problems don't really amount to a hill of beans compared to Nam Myoho Renge Kyo. We have confidence in our own lives. And when we feel that confidence waning we can chant and tell our lives: "I am determined to feel the deepest confidence in my life" and become more confident.

Yesterday I spent the afternoon learning about this outplacement company that my company hired to help all of us through the lay off. It's incredible. I can meet with a career counselor as many times as I like. I can use some of the tools I am learning to spread the reach of this blog.  Today I am going to a lecture on facebook and twitter. Cool.

I hope you can take a few moments to send the link to this blog to your friends. It may be just the encouragement they need to raise their life conditions.

Have a great full moon Wednesday.

have a great day in the highest of life conditions!

Mamta's Hurricane Experience

Here is an experience from Mamta, a blog reader. Thank you Mamta for sending this in!

Is it YOUR turn next?

I invite ALL readers to share your experience here on this blog.

Mamta and her Children.

This experience is from Mamta Neb who lives in Princeton, New Jersey. The picture of the downed tree above is an example of the destruction of the hurricane that was close to her house. Thank you Mamta for sharing this with us.

Mamta's Hurricane Experience:
I started practicing Nichiren Buddhism in June 2011 while I was posted in Singapore. I moved out from Singapore in November 2011 to the US. Though, I started this practice out of sheer curiosity due to the fact my sister in India is one of the senior members. However, ever since I started this, I have seen my life COMPLETELY changed for the better. While there are lots to share about my triumphs and victories where the negative circumstances were soon masked by the positive changes which maximized the potential to achieve happiness, I would definitely like to share one of the most notable benefits that I recently saw during the Hurricane.
In the last 100 years, Hurricane Sandy had quickly acclaimed the title of being one of the worst hurricanes the east coast had both witnessed and dealt with. This being my first hurricane, I could have never imagined how devastating it could be. My friends and neighbors shared their experiences related to the last few hurricanes (Irene, Katrina) and how they were hit by power outages/loss of water/ flooded basements/ falling trees etc. While I heard all this, I was very confident that we would be safe this time and would not face any problems as we have the Power of Nam Myoho Renge Kyo.
I started chanting earnestly in front of Gohonzhon and was consistently praying for our protection as well as those who surrounded us. I was confident that my prayers would be answered. My family and I were sure to chant for our protection and happiness in this time where we needed it the most.
The Strom hit us on Monday. It started raining since Monday morning and towards the evening, there was a heavy wind (almost at a speed of 50-60 miles per hour). I went to see the condition in the basement and was scared to see the water level which was rising high in the Sump pump. Usually, when the water level goes beyond a particular level, the pump starts automatically flushing the water out. As expected, we lost the power at 6 PM in the evening while it was still raining outside. I fell into despair and everyone in the family and our neighborhood got apprehensive about the flooding basement. At that very moment, I made a strong determination that NO MATTER WHAT, none of us including ourselves and the people around us would have the Flooding Basements and Falling Trees. I chanted to fulfill my mission and to show actual proof of my chanting and to reap the benefits as well.
I continued to chant all this while and finally went off to sleep with a growing sense of confidence and hope.
The next day when we all woke up, the first thing that I did was run to the basement to check the water condition expecting a flooded basement. I came downstairs expecting the worst only to have all my previous assumptions to be challenged. The basement was completely dry without a sight of a leak anywhere. The water levels in the Sump pump did not rise up beyond the "threshold" mark. My eyes brimmed with water as I knew that the Universe had just given me protection.
The Strom had stopped outside. We went out in our neighborhood to check the condition with our neighbours and to my utmost joy, none of our neighbors had flooded basements. There were no trees on the road except one at the back yard of our neighbors which did not cause any damage. At that very moment, I felt such a Great Sense of Gratitude towards the Mystic Law and an unshakable confidence of 100% victory.
It was unbelievable that an area which was approximate 1.5 - 2 miles from our house was completely saved. There were no trees on the road and hence no damage whatsoever.
As we made the drive out of our area and onto the road to see how others weathered this storm, it was devastating to see these enormous trees that once stood firmly were now spread across the roads. I have attached some pictures that I took that depict exactly what we saw as we drove by.
The Mystic Law is exactly what it spells, mystic. I don’t know how it happened, but I’ve come to realize that this Mystic Power blankets us with protection at any given moment in time. It’s give and take really, the more firm our belief in the Mystic faith, the more we can get out of it with any given circumstance that may be thrown at us. And in this, we can see that our protection is a direct result of the positive functions that are always in the works by our Universe.
In closing remarks, I would like to share one of the Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, vol. 1. p, 614 - "The Supremacy of the Law".
"So long one maintains firm faith [in the Mystic Law], one is certain to receive the great protection of the gods [the positive functions of the Universe]. I say this for your sake. I know your faith has always been admirable, but now you must strengthen it more than ever."

Gosho Quote for you

On this, the one year anniversary of my Mom's death, I share with you these words that have been inscribed in my heart.

This is one of the only religions that has the actual texts of the founder in written format...not someone else's interpretation of the founder's words. This quote reinforces how incredibly fortunate we are to have the Gohonzon and be able to draw the rich power of the universe from within our lives.

...from Reply to Kyo'o
This was written to Shijo Kingo's infant daughter, but meant for his parents. They had been followers for many years, and had recently been bestowed with the Gohonzon. They were one of the first families...and they had written the Daishonin to inform him that Kyo'o was very sick. This letter was his response. It was written August 15th, 1273.

Gosho Quote (This is almost the whole of this short Gosho):

Since I heard from you about Kyo'o Gozen, I have been praying to the gods of the sun and moon for her every moment of the day. Always cherish the Gohonzon which I sent you some time ago for her protection. This Gohonzon was never known, let alone inscribed by anyone in the Former or the Middle Day of the Law. The Lion, king of beasts, is said to advance three steps, then gather himself to spring, unleashing the same power whether he traps a tiny ant or attacks a fierce animal. In inscribing this Gohonzon for her protection, Nichiren is like the lion king. This is what the sutra means in "the power of an attacking lion." Believe in this mandala with all your heart. Nam Myoho Renge Kyo is like the roar of a lion, what sickness can therefore be an obstacle?
...Wherever your daughter may frolic or play, no harm will come to her, she will be free from fear like the lion king... But your faith alone will determine all these things. A sword will be useless in the hands of a coward. The mighty sword of the Lotus Sutra must be wielded by one courageous in faith. Then he will be as strong as a demon armed with an iron staff. I Nichiren, have inscribed my life in sumi, so believe in this Gohonzon with your whole heart. The Buddha's will is the Lotus Sutra, but the soul of Nichiren is none other than Nam Myoho Renge kyo. Miao-lo states in his interpretations, "The revelation of the Buddha's original enlightenment is the heart of the sutra."
Kyo'o Gozen's misfortunes will change into fortune. Muster your faith and pray to this Gohonzon. Then what is there that cannot be achieved? You should believe the Lotus Sutra when it says, "This sutra fulfills one's desires. It is the pond's cool, clear water that quenches thirst." and "They will have peace and security in this life and good circumstances in the next. When I am pardoned from exile in this province, I will hasten to Kamakura where we will meet. If one considers the power of the Lotus Sutra, he will find perpetual youth and eternal life before his eyes...."

Thank you Nichiren Daishonin!
Love to you!
Jamie

When the student is ready...the teacher will appear

It has been an exciting few days helping 2 precious new members learn how to practice. When the student is ready the teacher will appear.

I remember what it was like to be in the youth division of the SGI...it is a special time when you can grow in unprecedented ways and make friends that you will treasure for life.

Due to all the chanting of the members of our district we now have two brand new 20 year old young women so eager to learn! Today they spent three hours at my house practicing gongyo and chanting daimoku. It is not easy to learn gongyo...it has it's own rhythm and style. But once you learn it...it becomes so energizing to recite!
And it overcomes all language barriers. Once you learn it you can chant anywhere in the world together with SGI members. When you recite Gongyo you are literally reciting the words from the Lotus Sutra. You are joining your microcosm with the macrocosm of the universe...drawing forth the power that has always been yours...channeling it in the direction of your desires!

You are speaking the words of Shakyamuni Buddha...
and of course that makes total sense because
YOU ARE A BUDDHA! SO ARE WE ALL!

It ends with the deep prayer:

"At all times I think to myself:
How can I cause living beings
to gain entry into the unsurpassed way
and quickly acquire the body of a buddha"

There are several goals that my new young friends have...and I am going to chant for each of them and help them achieve their dreams. It will be so wonderful watching them grow in faith and become happier and happier and more certain of the power of their faith. Soon we will have many youth in our district! They are the leaders for the future. It is an honor to help them as I was helped by my seniors in faith so many years ago!
