Lighting the Lamp of Hope - From Florida!

The view from my new apartment ~ Yes!

"Live in a way that is full of life ~
for yourself,
for your loved ones,
for your friends.
People who do so
will find the courage
to transform sufferings into hopes.
Not only that,
but they will be able to light the lamp of hope
in the hearts of many others as well."

Daisaku Ikeda, Buddhism Day by Day, page 304.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I did it! Great victory! After having the worst possible fate befall a Mom, I have turned poison into medicine through my determination to pave the way of hope for others, and the courage generated from this incredible Buddhist practice.
As many of you know, last year, on July 2nd, my beloved son Ben became eternal at the age of 22. Yes, he took his own life, but schizophrenia, a disease of the brain with no cure, (along with a flawed mental health system), is the real cause. I feel it's important to tell the truth about this. I know I am not the only one who has been through this kind of suffering.
Through my tears and sorrow, I determined that, as a 31 year practicing Buddhist, I had the opportunity to create the greatest benefit from the greatest poison. And right now I have some solid results to show from this determination.
On July 2nd of this year, the anniversary of Ben's becoming eternal, I was chanting in my new apartment right on the beach in St. Pete Beach Florida.
And Ben's Memorial Mile, the fun and inspiring event we staged in Downers Grove Illinois on June 11th raised $22,000 for schizophrenia research (less expenses).
There is victory all around in my life!
But I can't bask in it forever, I must move forth and create more and more value every moment through this experience and through my life itself.
I produced a Ben's Memorial Mile edition of the book Ben and I are currently writing together through my own pen and the eternity of his life. "Our Forever Ben."
At Ben's Memorial Mile we raised $1,100 through the sale of less than 20 of these editions. As soon as I can, I will make this available to you. (Affordably)
But first, how did I accomplish this? I chanted to create value and show actual proof THROUGH this sad experience, not in spite of it. Those of you who've been reading this blog for a while know this. And you know I'm not some super human. I am very human...and devoted to showing proof of this practice through my life.  Sure, I cried a lot during this year. Sure, my heart actually broke with missing my sweet poetic, sincere, loving son. And every morning and evening I devoted my life to chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, the essence of life itself...the vibration of perfect healing for all involved.
This prayer is powerful. So powerful. It has the capacity to change our own lives from the inside out. And when WE change, our environments change. So I chanted with determination to show brilliant actual proof by the year anniversary.
All my life I have lived in colder climates...Chicago, Des Moines, San Francisco (BRRRR). Never have I lived in a climate that suits my sun-seeking, heat-seeking self. So in February I traveled to Florida where my wonderful nephew had moved.
The week I got back I spent three hours a day chanting for every door to open to move to his area of Florida - St. Petersburg. I chanted for every door to open. And I held my breath as I gave a 60 day notice on my apartment which had served me so well for 5 years.
Mystically, my step-mother told me her cousin lived somewhere in the area. She connected us and I discovered her cousin lived exactly in the most historic building on the beach. And her cousin, such a lovely woman, connected me to a family with an extra empty apartment who usually does not rent it except while they are there...in the winter. This couple made a special trip by train - over 30 hours - to open this apartment and get it ready for me...right here on the beach. They have been so welcoming and sweet. Yesterday they bought a new TV for the apartment so I can watch my DVDs.
And, as I've written previously, my friend Tracy said "I'm Your Girl!" and helped me to find new homes for almost all my belongings, except the ones that could fit in, or on, my car. She drove here with me and just left yesterday after having a great time exploring my beach home with me.
AND, on the day I actually moved, my friend Neha delivered my package to President Ikeda at the Hall of the Great Vow. It contains "Our Forever Ben," a letter, and the articles and results from Ben's Memorial Mile.
What will life hold now? We shall see together! Thank you for sharing this journey with me!
Chanting "Done Deal' Daimoku on this Mother's Day
Happy Mother's Day
to all the beautiful Mothers in the world.
As a mother I have a deep desire I share with most mothers: for our children to be safe, happy and healthy...for their lives to be filled with love, and for them to be able to find meaning and fulfillment in life.
Some children may be fortunate to have all those things.
And for some children that may be a far, far off dream.
And, as one of my mentors says: "We don't chant to accomplish things we could accomplish if we didn't chant. We chant to make the impossible possible!"
And "Don't tell the Gohonzon how big your problems are. Tell your problems how big the Gohonzon (your life) is."
Today my son Aaron is coming over to make me breakfast. And tonight I will visit Ben at the hospital. My determination is stronger than ever...
After I finish this blog post I am chanting in appreciation for my wonderful children, for Aaron's continued happiness and success, and for the perfect resolution of Ben's challenges...and his happiness and health.
I am chanting "Done Deal" Daimoku:
Done Deal Daimoku
Thank You Gohonzon
Thank You Life!
My victory is assured.
Some Kind of Way  -  It is a Done Deal!
PowerPrayer for Overcoming our BIGGEST Problem
What do we do when we have a problem that looks like it is bigger than Nam-myoho-renge-kyo? (Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is the name of the rhythm of life itself - learn more about chanting by clicking the SGI-USA link to the right)
Have you ever had a problem like this ~
When you think to yourself...
"Oh well, all those other Buddhists,
they've never seen THIS problem.
And although you have seen results from your practice, somehow you think THIS problem is different. In your heart you know that nothing is more powerful than your prayer...but also, in your heart, you are struggling to summon absolute faith that Nam-myoho-renge-kyo can overcome THIS one?
What do you do?
The answer to this question lies in our SGI organization. It is precisely for this reason, and many others, that we practice together. We study together. We encourage each other.
As we know from our studies of the Gosho by Nichiren Daishonin:
"Nam-myoho-renge-kyo
is like the roar of a lion.
What sickness
can therefore be an obstacle?"
I'm here in Ohio, preparing for the next phase of helping my son. He will stay in this hospital and we will return here every weekend for awhile.
I have engraved in my life the words of one of my mentors in faith:
"This is just another opportunity for your life to stand up and tell your fundamental darkness who is BOSS. This is just another WAVE, just another WAVE. You MUST stand up to it. You must chant with the conviction that there is no other way than your victory. You must summon that conviction from within your heart."
PowerPrayer for
Overcoming Our BIGGEST Problems
by Jamie Lee Silver from Chantforhappiness.com
Read this before chanting and summon your inner conviction. These exact words are not important - the strength of your chanting and your heart IS important!
Life~ !!!
Fundamental Darkness ~ doubt ~ fear ~
that exists in my life and in the lives of others
YOU ARE NO MATCH FOR NAM MYOHO RENGE KYO
THIS Daimoku,
right her, right now
is obliterating my fundamental darkness
and the world's fundamental darkness
and clearing the path for ______________________.
I claim my victory
I claim my life
I feel Nam-myoho-renge-kyo
flowing from within my life
to all around me.
I shine like the sun
I VOW to change the karma
that reveals itself in this problem.
I vow to change whatever it is,
and to root the cause of this suffering
out of my life forever.
I show proof of this victory right now.
I radiate love and hope to all I meet.
I choose the best possible choice at every moment.
I feel wisdom welling forth in my life.
I will win over this problem
and I use this experience to help others~!!!
Right here!
Right NOW
I VOW TO WIN~ No Matter what!
12 Incredible Buddhist Quotes for Overcoming Illness - please share!
For any of you who are facing illness - this should raise your spirits!
The person who originally compiled these quotes
was able to use this practice and modern medicine
to overcome breast cancer completely.
Please feel free to forward the link to this post
to anyone who is suffering from illness.
From President Ikeda's Lecture series "The Hope-filled Teachings of Nichiren Daishonin: On Prolonging One's Life Span - Faith for Leading a Long and healthy Life" in the July-August 08 Living Buddhism. (Thank you to my friend Melissa Bradford for compiling these great quotes!)
1. “Suffering from illness is a means by which you can eradicate your negative karma.”
President Toda, as quoted by President Ikeda. - pg 70
2. “To see illness as an opportunity to transform our karma – this strong spirit and resolve can break through all obstacles and devilish functions and open wide the path to happiness.  Like a rocket blasting out of the earth’s atmosphere, the passionate conviction of faith that comes from viewing illness as an opportunity to transform our karma can become a powerful engine propelling us forward not only in this existence but throughout eternity, enabling us to freely savor everlasting happiness.”  Pg 74
3. “Becoming ill in itself is certainly not a sign of defeat.  Even the Buddha, who is said to have ‘few ills and few worries’ (LS, 214), struggles with sickness from time to time.  Accordingly, there will be times when we are confronted with illness.  The important point above all is not to be defeated mentally or emotionally by the prospect of being ill.  Faith is the source of the fighting spirit to stand up to illness.  Therefore, as we noted earlier, Nichiren Daishonin first of all talks about the ‘treasure of faith’.  Pg 77
4. “As Nichiren says, ‘Illness gives rise to the resolve to attain the way’ (The Good Medicine for All Ills, WND-1, 937).  If a practitioner who upholds faith in the Mystic Law becomes ill, it definitely has some profound meaning.  It could be said that confronting illness is one route to awakening to the eternity of life.  President Toda often said, ‘A person who has overcome a major illness knows how to deeply savor life.’” Pg78
5. From Matilda Buck’s guidance, World Tribune 4/27/01 pg 10 “When We Face Disappointment” – regarding SGI leaders who overcame cancer and chanted this way:
Through this experience, I will become someone who does not doubt the Gohonzon (my life), no matter what happens.
As a Bodhisattva of the Earth, I have the mission to experience this, and as a Bodhisattva of the Earth, I have the mission to create a victory.
I will share the power of Buddhism with others, even as I grapple with this experience.
I won’t let my spirits stay down.  I won’t make a place in my life for negativity to settle.
6.From The Wisdom of the Lotus Sutra Volume 6:  “Praying with doubt is like trying to keep water in a bathtub with the plug pulled.  Our good fortune and benefit will drain away.  A passage from the ‘Perceiver of the World’s Sounds’ chapter reads, ‘from thought to thought never entertaining doubt!’  A confident prayer will reverberate powerfully throughout the entire universe.”  Pg 88
From Buddhism Day by Day:
7. “Buddhism views illness as an opportunity to attain a higher, nobler state of life.  It teaches that, instead of agonizing over a serious disease, or despairing of ever overcoming it, we should use illness as a means to build a strong, compassionate self, which in turn will make it possible for us to be truly victorious.”  pg 300
8. “The expansive world lies not in some distant place; it exists right where you are.  That is why you need to win where you are right now.  Today’s victory is linked to your eternal victory.”  Page 314
9, “No matter what the circumstances, you should never concede defeat.  Never conclude that you’ve reached a dead end, that everything is finished.  You possess a glorious future.  And precisely because of that, you must persevere and study.  Life is eternal.  We need to focus on the two existences of the present and the future and not get caught up in the past.  We must always have the spirit to begin anew ‘from this moment,’ to initiate a new struggle each day.” Pg 315
10. “The air around us is filled with radio waves of various frequencies.  While these are invisible, a television set can collect them and turn them into visible images.  The practice of chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo aligns the rhythm of our own lives with the world of Buddhahood in the universe.  It ‘tunes’ our lives, so to speak, so that we can manifest the power of Buddhahood in our very beings.”  Pg 314
11. From For Today and Tomorrow Daily Encouragement by Daisaku Ikeda: Sept 20 pg 288:  When your determination changes, everything else will begin to move in the direction you desire.  The moment you resolve to be victorious, every nerve and fiber in your being will immediately orient itself toward your success.  On the other hand, if you think “This is never going to work out,” then at that instant every cell in your being will be deflated and give up the fight, and then everything really will move in the direction of failure.
12. Aug 15 pg 249:  The first thing is to pray.  From the moment we begin to pray, things start moving.  The darker the night, the closer the dawn.  From the moment we chant daimoku with a deep and powerful resolve, the sun begins to rise in our hearts.  Hope – prayer is the sun of hope.  To chant daimoku each time we face a problem, overcoming it and elevating our life-condition as a result – this is the path of “changing earthly desires into enlightenment,” taught in Nichiren Daishonin’s Buddhism.
Benefit!
                         There is NO age limit on cool!
As some of you know I have a passion for public speaking. I love to give inspiring messages of hope and change people's lives. I have a new speech - one I've developed over the years and have recently rewritten.
Tomorrow, in the Chicago area, I'm giving my keynote speech called
"Growing Older, Better, Bolder, Stronger- Thriving Not Declining"
There will be 230 Senior Care Managers, Social Workers, and Professionals at a conference in the Chicago Area.
I speak about all the new research that proves we get BETTER as we get older, and the more we realize this (have positive age stereotypes) the happier we are, the longer we live, and the healthier we are!
I highlight the power of our words to not just describe our lives, but to PREDICT our lives.
Positive words and thoughts matter!
So excited about tomorrow!
9 Keys for Beginning to Chant - Please share!
By chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo you can transform all of your sufferings into benefit, and crystalize every desire into a blooming flower in our lives. You can become happier than you ever imagined...happier, more resourceful and more courageous in taking action.
We can change anything through chanting because we tap into our inner realm of unlimited possibility when we chant. You are a Buddha of infinite potential!
When we chant the Mystic law we see see changes in our life - whether we believe they will happen or not. Nam-myoho-renge-kyo means "I fuse my life with the mystic law of cause and effect through sound vibration" or, as some say "I tune my life to the rhythm of all life." Saying these words is a great cause that breaks through all suffering and creates a life of happiness. It works!
"Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is like the roar of a Lion." What sickness could therefore be an obstacle?
Nichiren Daishonin
9 Keys for Beginning to Chant
By Jamie Lee Silver from Chantforhappiness.com
1. Make Your list!
Make a list of what you really want in life. Take a fresh look at your desires and write them down.  Dream big. What do you really want? What do you want for yourself? What do you want for others? What do you want for the world? Make a list. Write it down and put the date on it.
Many people began chanting with desires that later transformed into other desires. So don't worry about whether your desires are "right" desires to have. Chanting is progressive, both you and your desires will evolve. I know people who began a very rewarding practice chanting for things that were important at the time, but later changed into other desires.
One of my friends chanted for a month to prove to his wife that this practice doesn't work. Well, he found out it DID work and more than 40 years later he is still practicing. In Nichiren Buddhism your desires ARE enlightenment. It is okay to desire whatever you desire, whether it's money, the happiness of someone else, a relationship, a job, or peace of mind and contentment. With continued practice you will see that your dreams for yourself actually become tied to the dreams of happiness for all.
2.Chant for what is really in your heart.
This is a great time to start a Journal.  It's not essential, but I think it's a great idea. Writing in a journal helps you become aware of your progress and benefits.
3. Choose a place to chant comfortably.
Find your "home" with your home, where you can feel comfortable chanting out loud, having a dialogue with your life itself.  Sit comfortably. (Did I say this enough times?! ~ I like to be comfortable!)
4. Choose a focus point on the wall.
Some people start by facing a blank wall; I chanted to a moon in a picture. Choose a focal point slightly above eye level.
5. You may wish to have a small table nearby for tea or your journal.
6. Write the words Nam Myoho Renge Kyo
on a piece of paper.
The words are pronounced as follows:
Nam ~    Nahm, rhymes with Mom,
Myoho ~ meeyohoh,
Renge ~  rain gay,
Kyo ~     kee oh.
Nam Myoho Renge Kyo.
Nahm Meeyohoh Rain Gay Kee Oh
(Phonetic spelling)
7. Begin to chant.
Hold your hands with the palms facing in and touching each other in front of your heart. And say Nam-myoho-renge-kyo over and over and over again with your eyes OPEN looking at the wall.
8. Don't Stress about your thoughts
At first, you will probably only be able to concentrate on the words themselves, and that's fine.  Once you've got the chant down you can think about what you want and chant at the same time.
9. Join the SGI
Join fellow practitioners as soon as you can. The SGI Portal to the right will help you locate a center near you, and you can call that center to connect to your local meeting house.
Chant twice a day every day. Get in rhythm! Establishing a twice a day rhythm to your chanting is important. It gets the wheels of your life moving.
Keep your goals in mind and you’ll remember your reasons for chanting!
These words and this vibration go deep into the heart of your life itself. They summon forth your highest wisdom, vitality and sense of purpose. They also uproot the karma that is making you suffer, and give you the opportunity to change this karma forever.
When you chant you are entering into a dialogue with your life itself. You are not chanting to any god or asking for favors. Instead, you are connecting with the rhythm of the universe itself.
As Nichiren Daishonin says in the famous writing (Gosho) "On Attaining Buddhahood" :
"If you wish to free yourself from the sufferings of birth and death you have endured since time beginning and to attain without fail unsurpassed enlightenment in this lifetime, you must perceive the mystic truth that is originally inherent in all living beings. This truth is Myoho-renge-kyo. Chanting Myoho-renge-kyo will therefore enable you to grasp the mystic truth innate in all life...It is called the mystic truth because it explains the mutually inclusive relationship of life and all phenomena.
"Life at each moment encompasses the body and mind and the self and environment of all sentient beings in the ten worlds, as well as all insentient beings in the three thousand realms, including plants, sky and earth, and even the most minute particles of dust. Life at each moment permeates the universe and is revealed in all phenomena. One awakened to this principle himself embodies this relationship. However, even though you chant and believe in Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, if you think the Law is outside yourself, you are embracing not the mystic law but some inferior teaching."
From Lectures on Attaining Buddhahood in this Lifetime by Daisaku Ikeda, 2007
PowerPrayer for Absolute Victory Over Our Biggest Challenge!
When dealing with the extreme challenges of life...those problems that we KNOW are going to make us better people, strengthen our faith and develop our lives, how do we keep going when things get rough?
How do we keep putting one foot in front of the other when it can appear our efforts aren't doing any good?
As you know, I am in the throes of the biggest challenge of my life - finding victory for my son who has an illness that confounds even the most seasoned professionals.
I am the Buddha on the team devoted to healing him and keeping him safe. I chant for his doctors, his counselors and the others who are surrounding him. I bring them information and resources that may help Ben, and they trust and work with me. We respect each other. And my family is all working in harmony as well...fueled by my daimoku and all of our determination.
And sometimes, even though I am a Buddha, even though I chant Daimoku, I feel a moment of defeat. I am human.
Yesterday I felt defeated...like all I'd done was never going to be enough and the situation was hopeless.
So what did I do? I called two of my Buddhist mentors. One encouraged me that giving up was not an option (I knew this in my heart). And the other praised me for doing my best at every moment and helping to reveal what needed to be revealed in the situation. She helped me see the benefit in all I have been doing. She helped me to appreciate the benefit in the moment.
I felt so great after talking to her! THIS is why it is so important to find a mentor in faith whom we can talk to...who can share our struggles and encourage us when the going gets rough.
The Soka Gakkai is FILLED with glorious mentors and warm hearts. We all need to reach out and develop these relationships. Finding and developing mentors is up to US! I have mentors because I have chanted to find people who inspire me. I have chanted to connect with my leaders. You can too.
If you are hiding your heart, please consider that there may be another way. You can chant to connect with mentors who will inspire you...so that you can be a mentor to others and inspire them. That's what it means to be a Buddha. Reach out! Ask for guidance from your local leaders. Chant to really find someone who can share your heart. It is so important.
In the November 21st World Tribune, Nick Wilkinson quoted from the Gosho
A Ship to Cross the Sea of Suffering.
"The currents of hardship
pour into the sea of the Lotus Sutra
and rush against its votary.
The river is not rejected by the ocean;
nor does the votary reject suffering.
Were it not for the flowing rivers,
there would be no sea.
Likewise, without tribulation
there would be no votary of the Lotus Sutra."
(The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, vol. 1, p.3
Here is my offering to you today:
Why Do I Chant? Why do We Chant?
Enjoying every moment in Ojai, and Venture.
Here's Etjen, my friend of 30+ years (who lives in Seattle) and me at the beach in Ventura.
Why do I chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo?
Why do we chant?
I am speaking for myself when I say
I chant because it works.
I chant to make my dreams come true.
I chant to continue to bring forth all the creative,
beautiful universe that lies within me,
and within everyone.
I chant for all those who are still suffering like I was,
before I found the tool of chanting.
I chant for the end of suffering ~ everywhere
I chant for all to realize their dreams.
I chant for us all to be happy, and live in a world of respect. Kosen-rufu, as we call it.
I chant, as Nichiren Daishonin and Daisaku Ikeda say
"To discard the transient and reveal the true."
What does that mean?
What is the transient?
The transient is self doubt
The transient is fear
The transient is any part of me that doesn't see the vast potential of my life.
The transient is any part of my identity that lingers from any painful experience I have ever felt.
The transient is any part of me that believes that the impossible is impossible.
What is the true?
The true is strength of spirit
the wisdom to make the best decisions for my life
and to be able to act upon them
as I write, direct and act in the beautiful story that is the life of Jamie Lee Silver,
who sought and found the Mystic Law,
the Nam-myoho-renge-kyo that is the deepest rhythm,
my heart, any heart, has ever know.
And now, because I chant,
because I encourage
and am encouraged
by my wonderful friends in the Soka Gakkai,
and wonderful friends all over,
I have the pleasure of living my life
sharing this incredible law,
sharing Daisaku Ikeda's heart,
and making friends all around the world.
11 Tips for Terrific Tosos (How to Chant Joyfully for Longer Times)
Sometimes SGI Buddhists like to chant for longer times. No one has to do this, or is expected to chant a toso. But sometimes we just want to! No one will ever judge you if you don't want to join in, but we will support you if you do.
A group of us are gathering at my house to chant from 5:00 until 8:00 tomorrow evening. Wonderful!
When I first began chanting a leader told me our lives and our karma can be compared to a glass with dirt at the bottom. The dirt represents the karma that exists inside our lives. She said when you start to chant you stir up that dirt and see it swirling around...and if you want to really dig deep and clear it out, you might want to chant a Daimoku Toso (chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo for an hour or longer) and to set a goal with specific time targets to chant per day...to do a Million Daimoku Campaign we call it.
A reader requested I share some ideas about chanting joyfully, and with concentration - especially since so many of you are challenging yourselves to chant for longer periods of time. Thank you for asking.
Please do not copy and paste the 11 Powerful Tips. Please share by sending the chantforhappiness.com url or using the share buttons at the bottom of the post. Thank you! Jamie
11 Powerful tips:
How to Joyfully Chant for Longer Times.
Toso Power!
From Chantforhappiness.com by Jamie Lee Silver
1. Realize that what you are about to do...chanting longer than usual ~ doing a Daimoku Toso (The word "Toso" is usually used for chanting periods of one hour or longer)  - has profound significance for your life. Give yourself credit for this worthy goal.
2. Write your goal or goals. (Some of these goals may occur to you naturally as you're chanting) Write yourself a Power Prayer (fresh determination) connected to the greater good...to the real difference you want to make in the world.
Remember that you are a precious votary of the Lotus Sutra and when you break through, the energy is forever changed. You are paving the way for others to break through ~ Your Happiness is IMPORTANT!
So address that in your goals and in your chanting For example:
"I am determined to have the most beautiful, loving relationship so that I can totally inspire other people that great relationships are possible ...I can show actual proof with my life, and be able to introduce others to this practice!
President Ikeda's guidance says you can chant to have 10,000 times more power in your prayer. So I usually dedicate some time to chanting to increase the power of my daimoku by 10,000 times!
3. Have your favorite drinks close by...tea...water...soft drinks...whatever you like.
4. DEMAND your results! YOU are the Buddha! Do not beg favors from a 'higher power." Remember the Gohonzon cannot get down off the scroll and do the Buddha's work in the world. YOU actually are the Gohonzon; it is inside your life. The scroll is a reflection of the highest life condition that exists within your own life. So when you are chanting CLAIM what is yours! Yes, the Gohonzon consists of the functions in the universe that are in our lives. Tell your life what you want.
5. All change comes from within. Take responsibility for your life...not blame. Realize whatever you are going through, whatever is causing you to chant...it's your karma..not your FAULT. Chant to reach the very core of that karma and root it out forever. THEN your life circumstances and environment will change to reflect it. You don't have to figure out the deeper cause, don't worry about getting it right. Chanting is experiential, not an intellectual exercise.
6. Keep your favorite study material close by...whatever touches your heart when you read it. And if you find yourself losing focus open it up to any page you want. I have "For Today and Tomorrow" next to me right now. I just opened it for you right now...I read "When we chant sonorous daimoku, the sun rises in our hearts. We are filled with power. Compassion wells forth. Our lives are lit with joy. Our wisdom shines. All Buddhas and Buddhist deities throughout the universe go to work on our behalf. Life becomes exhilarating." Read your passage and get right back to chanting!!!
7. Invite others to chant with you!
8. Have pen and paper handy. You'll want to write down those brilliant ideas that come into your mind while you're chanting. You'll also want to write down some of those pesky thoughts and reminders that keep coming back...things like "remember to buy dog food." Just write it down and eject it from your brain so you can focus on what really matters.
9. Put your telephone away. Tell people you are busy.
10. After you chant write in your journal. Write to me too. I love to hear your successes and your challenges. I will only share your victories with your permission! Write me at Chantforhappiness.@gmail.com.
11. Some obstacles might arise after your toso. And just say "Hello obstacles! I was expecting you!" When you take on the mission to change your karma for yourself and others you can compare it to turning your speedboat to HIGH. The faster you go, the more resistance you feel.
Above all - Don't give up! You CAN change your problems into benefits. You ARE the Buddha!
I am chanting for you to accomplish your goals and shine with happiness.
If you are using the PowerPrayers please let me know how they are working for you! Email me at chantforhappiness@gmail.com
PowerPrayer for a Harmonious Family
PowerPrayer for a harmonious Family
By JamieLee Silver
From ChantforHappiness.com and the upcoming book:
PowerPrayers for Chanting Your Way to Absolute Happiness and Success
As Nichiren buddhist, we know that wars begin and end within our own hearts. and I know from personal experience that we sometimes turn against the ones we love when we are really stressed and challenged. But we know, we really know, that the answer lies in our determination to create a harmonious family, and to change our own, and our family's karma with our determined Daimoku. (Chanting of nam-myoho-renge-kyo).
Daisaku Ikeda states:
A person who respects others is respected by others in return. Those who treat others with compassion and concern are protected and supported by others. Our environment is essentially a reflection of ourselves.
From Ikedaquotes.org
Daimoku can change ANYTHING. It can change inharmonious relationships, and give us the courage and wisdom we need to make changes in our lives.
With that in mind, I offer you the PowerPrayer for a Harmonious Family. Usually we read PowerPrayers before chanting so that we can keep our determinations and prayers fresh in our minds while sonorously chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, the title of the Lotus Sutra and the name of the rhythm of life itself. Chanting allows us to tap into the vast resources our lives already possess, raise our life conditions and become absolutely happy...possessing the type of happiness that is not swayed by daily changes in our lives.  Chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is the most powerful cause we can make for our lives.
That's it!
The following PowerPrayer is an excerpt from the upcoming book PowerPrayers for Chanting Your Way to Absolute Happiness and Success by Jamie Lee Silver and Julia Landis
Please do not copy and past the PowerPrayer. You can share it by emailing the url chantforhappiness.com or using the sharing buttons at the bottom of the post. Thanks!
PowerPrayer for a Harmonious Family
Life!
I am Nam-myoho-renge-kyo!
I have the power to chant happiness and harmony for my whole family
With every daimoku I am picturing us happy
I am erasing years of karma with every Nam-myoho-renge-kyo
With every Daimoku I am summoning appreciation for my loved ones. I appreciate them more and more.
For every fault, sickness, sadness, problem I see in my family ~
I chant to change this in MYSELF so that the karma of the whole family is changed!
I am chanting happiness and harmony into my family
My prayer is enough!
I will not give up
I am tearing every bit of karma that makes any of my family members suffer - I am tearing that karma out by the roots.
My family will never be the same.
I will not give up!
I will have a happy family that will shine as a beacon of hope to all who are suffering.
My chanting gives me the wisdom to communicate with composure and compassion.
I am the Buddha!
I chant specifically for these outcomes:______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Challenging the Fierce Storms of Our Karma! We are Victorious!
Challenge!
Where there is challenge, there is progress.
Where there is challenge, there is hope.
Where there is challenge, there is joy.
Where there is challenge, there is happiness.
Where there is challenge, there is victory.
All things in the universe
are constantly engaged in challenge.
Flowers strive to break through the deep snows
to send up new sprouts.
Waves crash tirelessly against rocks on the shore,
wearing them down.
Day after day, the sun bursts forth from the darkness
and emerges joyously.
All things quietly and tenaciously persevere,
working unceasingly to fulfill their unique mission,
whether seen or unseen.
Challenge!
Challenge!
Challenge!
That is what it means to be alive.
We will take on the challenge ~~
to teach one friend after another the way to happiness,
for the sake of peace and prosperity for all people;
to stand defiant
in the face of the fierce storms of our karma,
so we can demonstrate the true potential of human beings;
to lead a life in which we can enjoy ourselves
at ease (see the Lotus Sutra and it's opening and closing Sutras, p. 272),
so we can proudly declare how happy we are!
I will keep moving forward ~~
for my single, small step today
will eventually forge a great path!
I will not be defeated~~
for I know that, even after dark nights of raging blizzards,
the sun of victory will rise again tomorrow without fail!
